Runners/workout/healthy living ladies--snack question

BethKate2BethKate2 member
edited August 2014 in TTC After a Loss

I started running back in May, and I've recently (this week) gotten myself up to 6 mile runs. In the last week, I had one 3 mile run and three 6 mile runs. Since hitting that 6 mile mark, I'm finding that I'm starving all the time. It seems like no matter how much I'm eating, I'm never full, and I figure it's got to be because I've burned significantly more calories this week than I had been recently.

My question is....what are your go-to snacks that are healthy and make you feel like you're not starving?

ETA: I just scrolled down the board and realized I could've posted this in the healthy living check-in. I didn't even think of it since I'm not usually part of that check-in, but it probably would've been a good place for this question!

Re: Runners/workout/healthy living ladies--snack question

  • When I go on long distance bike rides, I find that after I really crave things like avocados, bananas, cheese, and  peanut butter.  Basically healthy fats and healthy carbs.  The fats especially help a lot!

  • I would definitely agree with @readinglove‌ that protein is a winner. If you like peanut butter try it with Apple slices, that's delish!
  • After 3 miles or more I always drink a glass of chocolate milk and eat an apple with peanut butter. I also try to eat throughout the day, like every 3 hours or so.
  • My fave snacks are Kind bars, frozen grapes, bell peppers and guacamole, almonds/nuts... Babybel cheese wedges, sometimes popcorn too.

  • Nice job on the runs and mileage :)

I try to eat pretty natural for the most part. I like to eat carrots and peanut butter, carrots and hummus, apples and a nut butter, nuts with dried fruit, granola bars, fruit and yogurt, and for really high mileage, then soft pretzels with gouda/Swiss cheese. After a really long run, I drink chocolate milk or ovaltine. I find then that my meals don't stick with me long enough.

  • Everyone has good snack ideas. I just wanted to jump in and say that if you're going to start running further than 6 miles, you might want to consider eating during your run. I got away from running for awhile but i think most experts recommend some replenishment every 50 to 60 minutes.
Doing so always made a big difference for me

  • Way to go on the mileage girl! Everyone here has nailed it on suggestions, like @readinglove‌ said, it's all about the good proteins. My go-to's are: Greek yogurt, smoothie's that I make with spinach, fruit, and yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, peanut butter and banana toast before runs, avocado and tuna fish sandwiches (use the avocado in place of the mayo), avocado in general with some salt and pepper, almonds...

  • I've eaten all mentioned snacks, so I don't have anything new to really add! But for me one of the most important things is how frequently I eat every day. I try to eat a little something (fruit, nuts, granola bar, veggies with hummus, etc. etc.) every 2-3 hours. Also, I agree with @Rachaeleigh ....once my runs were 6-7 miles or more (I was training for a half marathon), I needed to refuel during my run. Personally, I have trouble eating actual food during my run (it never really sits very well), so I would eat a shot block or 2 and that worked well for me. Congrats on your mileage! I'm trying to get back up there again....you're inspiring me to work on it!

  • First of all, huge congrats on the awesome mileage! Second of all, there is a name for this, and it is runger! Meg had good ideas. Running while hungry will make you perform badly. So just make sure you're eating enough fats, that's a common mistake people make, like pp said. Bananas are good too! I love a tortilla with PB and banana before a run. Lastly, make sure you're mixing those long 6 milers up with some shorter runs. Your long run shouldn't be more than 50% of your weekly mileage, to reduce risk of injury. And injury sucks. Signed, girl who can't run due to a stress fracture and plantar fasciitis!

Sorry about your injuries! I definitely want to avoid that.

I've been running 3-4 times a week, going on the elliptical at the gym 2-3 times, and then taking 1-2 days to rest. I also try to alternate days so that I'm not running two days in a row now that I'm going longer distances.

  • @RedTwizzlers ugh on the stress fracture, I've had two and they are NO fun. Sending you lots of recovery vibes! Are you able to get in the pool and aqua jog at all? As mindless as that is, it definitely helped me retain my fitness while I was on the bench.
