February 2015 Moms

Caffeine

I have had terrible Naseau. Like all day long and just couldn't eat or drink much. I'm 12 weeks now and I've been having 1 can of coke a day. Is truly been my only relief. Anyone else doing this? I feel like a terrible mom to be, but I really needed some relief.

Re: Caffeine

  • My doctor to me I could have up to 200mg of caffeine a day. Just check the amout per serving on the can or try a caffeine free version.

  • I have a Pepsi or maybe one cup of coffee a day. It's under 200mg of caffeine so it's fine. Pepsi is like 60mg in one can, can't imagine coke is much different
  • Yeah you should be okay, most cola type drinks have between 50-75mg of caffeine per serving, though one can used to be 2 servings. It should still be under the 200mg that most doctors are okay with.  However, after doing research on it myself, there really haven't been any studies really showing that any real problems are connected to caffeine intake during pregnancy.  There are some assumptions, there are some iffy science behind some studies claiming low birth weight -- especially when mothers may have also been exposed to tobacco in these studies-- there is really no legitimate reason for such caffeine restriction.

I'm not saying drink a pot of coffee a day through your whole pregnancy, but a cup or two of coffee a few times a week, or a can or two of soda probably won't hurt you when it comes to caffeine. I used to be a 3-4 cup of coffee a day person, some days a whole pot of coffee or espresso if I went out for coffee...I cut back probably six months ago in an effort to get pregnant.  I may have a half a cup of coffee some days, maybe a soda other days, but I almost always have a little bit of caffeine a day. Some days I'll have two cups of coffee...like on Mondays...seems to be a 2 cup of coffee day. lol

Just maintain an idea of moderation, like with sugar and fats and other things we're supposed to cut back on during pregnancy, it's all about moderation. No need to feel like a bad mother for having a bit of soda cause it helps your tummy. That does not make you a bad mother in the slightest. :)

  • Yeah, if you really are worries about the caffeine, the caffeine free version tastes the exact same.
  • I wouldnt feel guilty over a can of coke. its not like your drinking redbulls.

  • I don't think one can of anything is going to hurt.  (Ok, maybe like a can of vodka wouldn't be ideal.)  I'm definitely still having my grande iced coffee every day - we must survive after all.

I'm saying this more as a trivia item (I had no idea) and NOT because you shouldn't have a can of soda that's helping you feel better, but my sister is a doctor and said it's actually the phosphoric acid that's in most sodas, not the caffeine, that's a reason for limiting (not eliminating) them during pregnancy.  Too much can leach calcium from bones I think?

Anyway, go on with your can of soda!  All things in moderation.

  • If you are worried about caffiene, drink sprite or 7up or ginger ale instead of coke. Those relievw my nausea without the effects lf caffeine. I only drink coke once a while these days.
  • Don't feel guilty! I have a cup of coffee everyday and sip on a can of coke in the afternoon. It is the only thing that helps get me through the day at work sometimes. I did this with my first and she is fine. I didn't at first when I was pregnant with her but I was dying without caffeine. This time around I just cut back on my cups of coffee but will not eliminate caffeine.
  • I've switched over to caffeine free Pepsi that I dabble in only once in a while. They taste the same. I agree with trying that.

  • You are fine. I drink a half cup of coffee every morning and sometimes I'll have a cup of soda with my lunch or dinner.

  • No need to feel guilty!! My doc said 200mg is completely fine. And I know plenty of pregnant women who drank more than that and had healthy babies!
