Trouble TTC

intro and metformin ?

Hey all. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for over a year.
2 months ago my doc put me of Metformin. My cycle length was out of control for the first time in my entire lige. I had always been 22 days....suddenly I was 35..then 42...then 50!!!
She never mentioned PCOS. And though I've had cyst before they were never serious.
Anyone else on metformin alone? I am sooo tired all the time!

Re: intro and metformin ?

  • I've only seen my regular OBGYN. I am bad about eating enough as she also recommended I lose 30 pounds.
I take 1000mg a day with food. But often just a protein bar in the morning :(. Perhaps I should try healthy snacks throughout the day

  • I am mobile so I can't see if you have your info in a siggy, but do you have a PCOS diagnosis. Or diabetes/pre-diabetes diagnosis? These are the only reasons I think you would take Metformin. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me!

Also, is the doctor running more tests or going to add Clomid or Letrozole later? My RE will be putting me on Metformin soon and adding Letrozole to promote ovulation.

Married September 2012. TTC since September 2013

June 2014 - Dx w/ significant PCOS and referred to RE.

July/August 2014 - Testing complete: Testosterone & AMH very high, FSH slightly high, Vitamin D low, tubes and lining all lovely. DH SA: A+

    Cycle 1 (Nov 2014): 2.5 mg Letrozole/Ovidrel/TI = BFN

    Cycle 2 (Dec 2014): 5 mg Letrozole/Ovidrel/TI - BFN

    Cycle 3 (Jan 2015): 5mg Letrozole/Ovidrel/TI - BFN

    WTF consult scheduled for 1/29

  • I'm also wondering what @LindseyM2012 is asking. Did they diagnose you with PCOS or some other blood sugar disorder? I'm wondering why you are taking the metformin to begin with. May be easier to give advice with that info.

I hope you start feeling better! Good luck!

  • Hi! I would recommend having more testing done to see if you have PCOS for sure before taking the metformin. Also, as PPs said, I think it's only if you have PCOS with insulin resistance. I would recommend seeing a RE (reproductive endocrinologist) as they are more specialized in helping you to get pregnant. Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies. I don't have either diagnosis. .and she hasn't talked about adding additional meds.

    ****child warning****

I have a 2 year old and my doctor insist at my age (26)...it's okay no take a less aggressive approach. However I am changing a family with this decision. ..not her call to make!
  • So without a diagnosis of PCOS or diabetes, I'm unsure why you'd take Metformin. Perhaps you should clarify with the doctor.

Is there any indication you're having fertility issues at this time?

Hmmm this doesn't make much sense on the part of your doctor. If you are seeing an OB I would recommend seeing a RE. Also, if it were me I wouldn't take medications until I knew the reason for taking it. A "less aggressive approach" can be good but I would still want to have a semen analysis, and testing done first so that you can make an informed decision.

  • Thanks girls! She told me the metformin was to regulate my cycle...and the first month worked like a charm. ..doing the 2ww now.
I have endo pretty bad and we've been tracking ovulation and trying for over a year. Due to my age she hasn't wanted to get aggressive. :( again not her choice.
  • I guess I'm still confused about how Metformin is regulating your cycle if you done have PCOS or diabetes, since it's function is to block insulin receptors in your brain. Am I missing something? I'm not trying to be sarcastic; I'm really curious.

I'm glad you've gotten to the 2ww. Good luck.

    Yes, I'm a little confused.

OP, you have a sad face about your DR not wanting to be aggressive with treatment. You don't have to stay with one dr if you are unhappy. Sometimes people get a second opinion. Also, you say you have endo, that would make me want to see a RE ASAP. I would definitely consider seeing a RE; if you want more to be done they will be able to help you the best.

  • I'm on Metformin. I believe your tired maybe from insulin resistance? That's what I have and I'm exhausted all of the time. And agreed with seeing an RE right off the bat if you can. I wish I would have a long time ago.
  • I have a call into a different doctor that I've heard amazing things about...he will see me the end of September! Ugh.
Thanks for the input ladies. I am a big believer in questioning your doc...but didn't know anyone else who was going through what I was...so asking you ladies helped a bunch.
