Good eater, turning picky...

I've been lucky that lo has eaten and loved just about every food we have given him. The last two nights, he has completely rejected his dinner. Previously he would have devoured these meals. I gave him another meal but not sure this is the right thing to do. He ate a lot so he's hungry.
Are you making your lo's eat what you cooked? Just excepting it and making something else?

Anyone else encountering this? What are you doing?

  • They get what we eat (which is usually a protein and veggies) and also on their plate is usually cheese, fruit, and bread or a tortilla. They can eat as little or as much as they want, it's not worth the stress to fight. But when we do leftover night Bradley can have all the bagels and cream cheese he wants (his fav) and Ty gets at least a half an avocado (still his fav).

DD will eat what she's given but she usually starts getting picky closer to the end of the meal. Then we'll offer her some fruit or something she really likes and she'll continue to eat.

  • I decide what she is having and if she doesn't eat it, then I will give her one different/new thing. If she doesn't eat that, then the meal is over. Typically she eats if she is hungry.

She only really throws food once she has eaten enough.

But my kid ate a banana and a half after having a full dinner the other night (she was full on pointing at the fruit bowl) so maybe I am not the best person to talk to about this. Other than veggies she will eat most everything.
  • Thanks everyone. It's weird for him to be picky now!!! @JessicaKS‌ that's how my lo is, he loves food and lots of it! So it's weird to give him stuff he likes and he rejects it.
  • He may be teething? Occasionally my great eater will have a day or two like that when all he wants is liquid foods and to chew on something like a cucumber spear or even celery. Then he goes right back to eating normally again. Could this be the reason?

Otherwise, I always choose beforehand what I will offer (based on what we are eating as it's always the same thing with some variation). And I will not offer more than that cause that's an easy trap to fall into.

He started thinking throwing food is fun a while back, so If he is throwing stuff on the floor, we remove his food and just tell him we don't throw and let him sit there for a minute. I will usually try one more time and if he does it again, he's done. We then will try at the next scheduled time. He typically eats very well now, so I believe this has worked for him for now anyways.

  • My kid is so picky. She won't eat meat or vegetables no matter what. She eats far too much fruit. It's all she will eat.. Plus noodles and rice. I don't know what to do. I offer everything but she just throws it or she thinks she's being sneaky and shoves it down the side of her high chair.
  • @mshukh‌ he is getting his back molars. However third night in a row he wouldn't eat what he normally would like chicken and sausage. I gave him something else and he devoured it. Up until 3 days ago he would have eaten those meals I offered. Are his tastes changing? Is he just asserting himself? I'm not sure.
  • LO eats anything for the most part but she does have days where something she typically loves, she rejects and just feeds thedogs. I will give her one other option (I keep some gerber toddler meals in the pantry for these occasions) and a fruit and if she doesn't eat that either, we're done.

I am trying to make an effort to prepare different dishes bc she does seem to get bored with same thing. She loves ground beef (meat lover like her dad). I left them my homemade meatloaf last night before I left so I'm curious how that goes over. :)

  • We're having a similar issue. I finally had to start rotating foods and offering more variety. She is sick of bananas, peas, avocados, peaches, and grilled cheese sandwiches because I've offered them so often in the beginning. I was getting lazy, and I think it's just natural for them to get tired of certain foods. I've also realized that she does much better if I offer 4-5 snack-like meals because she is too busy to sit and eat any large amount of food at one time. She's not big into any very spicy or complex flavors yet. I tried to feed her Indian curry last night and she was NOT having it (which is sad because we love Asian spicy food in this house).
