Unsettling news re: my NT scan...

Although about a month ago we got word that the NT results looked good, they drew blood last Monday as a last step to the test and my doctor called today to say that the results of this last blood test were "slightly abnormal." Now I have to probably go through more tests for Down Syndrome. We made an appointment with the genetic counselor at the hospital for tomorrow afternoon so I'll learn more about our options at that point. The doctor said not to freak out since there are false positives with the NT scan, but I cant help it - I'm freaking out. I cant handle this emotional roller coaster.

I dont even know when I'll be able to schedule more testing and how long it will take...this really stinks.

  • If you do one of the blood tests it will probably take a week or two to get results. Hang in there! The waiting is the worst part.

  • Well all you can do is what you are doing so don't stress yourself out it doesn't do you or the LO any good. Nothing is conclusive and the Dr. is just taking percautions with further testing. You have to relax...breath...go do something nice for yourself...something that takes you mind off of things.

    T&Ps your way!

I'm so sorry, that is very alarming.

    Lots of thoughts and prayers!

ETA: but like the doctor said, try not to worry too much. There are false positives.

  • Going through something similar (4mm nuchal fold measurement). The first few days I was a complete wreck. Since then I have done some more research on the possible outcomes (downs, heart defects etc) and though they aren't ideal, it's helped me find some peace until we get more results. I hope and pray that you find some peace during this stressful time as well! Hugs and prayers your way
  • Thank you all for your kind words. Can I ask what follow up blood tests you had (for those who had them)? I know there are a couple of different tests and I know I'll learn more tomorrow but it would be nice to go in there with a frame of reference.

My appointment is at 3pm tomorrow. I'm glad they fit me in quickly.

I haven't had bloodwork yet but I'm getting a more detailed ultrasound to look for Down syndrome markers and to get a better look at the heart. My appointment is also tomorrow. I will be checking in with you about your results for sure:)

For me, I didn't have the option to choose between them- Harmony/MaterniT21/Panarama... they are all very similar, but my office only does the MaT21.
    Thank you!
  • There have been several people on this borad who have gone through this so know that you're not alone. This is the advice I gave them.....
I had a similar situation with my first pregnancy. I was so upset. After doing some research I found out that an increased risk result is kind of common and most of the time that baby is perfectly fine. Its completely normal to be sad and to worry but remember that you don't have definite results yet. Try to relax until you get the results back. Praying that your baby is perfectly healthy! Also, look at your ultrasound pictures from when they did the scan. Do you see evidence of a nasal bone? A lot of DS babies don't have a visible nasal bone at that scan so if you see one its another sign that everything is okay. I wasn't sure what it was supposed to look like so I Googled it and sure enough my little girl had a visible one which made me feel a little better!!

  • So sorry, I hope it's just false results and all is OK!

  • I didn't know this about the nasal bone. There is definitely a visible nasal bone in the scan. That made me feel a lot better.

@lauren.shap....I had the Panorama test done. My office didn't give me a choice. I just got the results back last Friday, and I am now low-risk. It took about 11 business days to get the results....and it was so hard waiting. But I got a lot of reassurance from the posts here and on other boards that helped to calm me down.

This, but mine only does the Harmony. I asked why and they said for people who have difficulty paying for it (say, insurance doesn't cover it), this company is really easy to work with. All very similar.

  • Everyone has hit on the points I just wanted to says hugs. I can't imagine and I hope you get more answers!

I had the harmony test done, and we also came back at an increased risk based on our NT scan. If the harmony comes in with a positive we will go ahead with the amnio. Hoping it won't come to that. The wait has been almost unbearable, and I've found myself counting the hours until the results. We've already decided that we wouldn't continue our pregnancy if we receive a positive amnio, but again trying to keep positive. Feel free to message me if you'd like to chat.

  • Hugs! Hope it all turns out okay

  • I wouldn't put much merit in the NT test results. I had a high risk for downs from the NT scan. Then when the panorama came back it was minimal risk for downs. However I had a weird result come back for T18. Then an ultrasound with a specialist didn't show anything wrong. So currently I am waiting to get my amnio on the 7th.

Talking to my specialist it seems they are finding that they shouldn't be doing these tests on just anyone. The are finding that young women with normal pregnancies are getting weird results. This testing is still very new and it only gives you statistical information. So that means no definitive results.

With all I have went though so far I really wish I never did the initial testing. And just waited to get the amnio.

The further testing for you will probably be the harmony test. All they do is take two vials of blood and send it off. Make sure if you want to know the gender that they mark it on the paperwork. As for how long it takes for the results I would tell yourself 2 weeks.

    Hope everything turns out okay.
  • The wait is the absolute worst. Hang in there. It'll get better soon.

I feel for you; it is such a nerve wracking experience. We went through the same thing (nuchal translucency of 3.2 mm at the NT scan). We met with the genetic counselor that day and she sent us for a Verifi blood test (similar to Panorama and the other cell-free DNA tests). Thankfully, everything came back normal. The results took five business days and it was one of the longest weeks of my life.

If I can offer any advice for coping, I'd suggest talking to a friend-- someone outside of your family and partner. Telling my small mom's group what I was dealing with made me feel stronger, like there were others on my side, and they helped me so much that week by both distracting me and by checking in to see how I was feeling.

Rest assured that false positive screens on the NT scan are VERY common. A number of us on this board have gone through the same experience and have since learned that our babies are chromosomally normal.

  • OP thinking of you today! I hope it all goes well <3
  • You are all so sweet. We met with the genetic counselor yesterday - right now the risk from the last round of blood test said the baby has a 1 in 70 chance of having Downs. We did the math - that's a 1.4% chance.

We opted for the cell free DNA blood test as a next step and they took the blood yesterday. I'll know in a week. Now we wait.

    Thank you all!
