Oops! Landed up posting this on the wrong board! Anyways want F14 opinion:-) I was reading a very interesting article about having hidden nanny cams, pros, cons and what's legally allowed in various states. I thought it would be interesting to get an opinion. Please do share why you would or would not have a nanny cam. Also, if you are/were a nanny how would you feel about it?

I would totally have a hidden camera. I want to see what my nanny is doing in my absence

    I wouldn't have one.

If I was nannying I'd want to be told, not to change my actions towards kids but as armfruit said, sometimes you need to pick a wedgie.

I know some districts put cameras in classrooms.  As a teacher I could not be as effective (translation:  goofy) with a camera.  I wouldn't want my hypothetical nanny to feel too inhibited to sing or make funny faces just because she was being recorded.

ETA: I wouldn't leave my kid with someone I didn't trust, so I see mostly negative with tapping them.

  • I don't have a nanny cam but I do have security cameras that provides a live feed to my phone. I snoop all the time on the sitter and have found things that really ticked me off...sleeping on couch with head covered with blanket while baby plays on floor or sits in bouncer. I was so mad, she only watches them 3-4 hrs a day and does no interaction with him or my other children. I talked to her and then caught her again doing it so she no longer watches them unless I have no other option
  • This is hard. Of course I would want to only hire someone I trusted implicitly - but I also think having a video camera ensures peace of mind for the parents. And as long as the nanny is informed, I think it's fair.

I have video cameras in my store, of both the front and the back. I let employees know they're there and that I do sometimes go back and watch footage. Do I trust my employees? Yes, absolutely, or else I wouldn't have hired them. But just knowing that the boss can see what goes on keeps people on the straight and narrow. They have also told me the cameras help them feel secure - if the register is short or whatever, and it was an honest mistake, I can go back and watch what happened and prove their was no misconduct or theft.

This applies to me, as well - my owners can dial in and see the store remotely, so I know there's always a chance I'm being watched. It was weird at first, but I don't even think about it anymore. I scratch my butt openly. ;-)

  • I believe that in some states it may be illegal to videotape an employee without their knowledge - does anyone know anything about that?

  • @gucciman3‌ what do you mean you don't have a nanny can but security cams that give you live feed? I assume it's the same thing? The nanny knows about it?
  • I watch a toddler from time to time. I offered the web cam access (it's locked down like Fort Knox), but the mom stated she would spend her work shift watching her phone and not working. But I did feel I needed to nicely mention that there was a camera in the room where her 3 yr old sleeps. It felt like an invasion on privacy to not tell the mom.

Um. What? You still let this person watch your kids?

    This.

I wouldn't do it without telling the nanny. I don't feel it's fair or okay to tape someone without their knowledge. Yes we are likely being filmed everywhere in public, but to record someone when they're in a home is different.

It's part of our home security system through vivint. One camera faces the front door but our couch is also in the view and she always lays on the couch and sleeps. She knows it's there and knows we use it to keep eye on kids. It will automatically record if the alarm is triggered

I'm assuming the sitter knew about the cameras. @gucciman3‌ am I remembering correctly that you're a corrections officer?

Yes I am an officer which makes me supper caustious of everything and everyone
  • @KatyBriggs‌ I think daycare offers it as an upfront feature. Plus in day care you know your child is not alone with this one person so you have some sort extra eyes on how your child may be treated. A nanny cam is not a usual practice I think and it's set up in your home. In essence not different but perceived very differently I think.
