Two Q's on Registry Items: Diapers & Clothes

Question #1: Should you put diapers on your registry?
My first thought was to leave them off. I figured if people are going to get them they will do so on on their own, but then I started second guessing myself because what if people don't see them and assume we're CDing?

Question #2: Should you put clothes on your registry?
My first thought, again, was to leave it off (unless it was a specialty item -- like we have some twin onesies or matching outfits on our universal/Amazon registry). I figured people would just buy that stuff anyway and they should pick out what they like. But then I started worrying people are going to think I'm being a brat and just don't want clothes (I see so much complaining about getting clothes around here and that is far from the truth for me. I want clothes! I just want people to pick out what they like.)

And, of course, I am the Queen of Overthinking.

Re: Two Q's on Registry Items: Diapers & Clothes

  • I always put both. It helps people to know what kind of diapers you would prefer and what sizes you want. Same goes for clothes. Lots of times people get really cute but impractical outfits for newborns so it can be helpful to give people an idea of what you're looking for.

  • People will buy you clothes whether they are on the registry or not.  (And some people just don't look at registries period.)

As for diapers?  I wouldn't register for disposables...  but I might register for a few CDs if the ones I liked were available at the store I was registering at.

  • You definitely should put diapers on your registry if you want a certain brand.  FYI...Pampers are best for little boys and Huggies for little girls.  The way Huggies are shaped a little boy will pee right out the top, but they are good for girls.

And I didn't register clothes...only because the clothes in stores change so much that most of the registered items would not be available once people start shopping for your shower.
  • I would register for diapers if you are doing disposables, that way people know what brand you want. Ditto with things like diaper cream, shampoo, etc.

I wouldn't register for clothes, people like to pick those out themselves.

  • I registered for Pampers, because those are the diapers I want.  I also registered for a few clothing items--coats, hats, and basic onesies.  I thought maybe people would look at it and get an idea of the type of things we need.

  • I did not register for diapers, but I put some onesies, sleep sacks, sleep gowns, socks, etc. on the registry.  Just basic stuff.

No one knows what we're having so I don't anticipate getting many clothes until the baby is born.  Then I'm sure the grandmas will go crazy.

  • I put diapers on my registry cause as you said people might think you are doing the cloth diaper thing.  So I see it as letting your people know your plan.

As for clothes I did register for clothes just because I wanted to make sure people got the idea of styles I like.  I'm having a girl and hate the skirts and tutus but I found tons of clothes I do like so I put some of them on there so people will know what i'm looking for style wise.  I know I'm probably gonna get outfits that I find horrific because people are gonna buy clothes they like.  But I'm hoping some will at least be a little respectful

  • You're overthinking it - registries are just suggestions and in the end, people will buy you what they want to buy you.  That said, put anything on there you may want for your LO because you get the completion discount once the shower date has passed, which is nice.  We put a lot of things on ours with DS that we really didn't expect as gifts, but knew we would have to purchase anyway and just used the completion discount in the end to save some $$ on what we needed/wanted.

  • I didn't register for either and got plenty of both.  We used cloth diapers after the first 2 weeks or so, and I ended up donating a lot of disposables that I got as a shower gift but never used.  If there's a certain brand you want, or if you want to include lower cost items on your registry, diapers are a good way to go.  FWIW, I've had good luck with Pampers, but I haven't tried other brands.

I'm not sure I'd bother registering for clothes, unless you register for basics like white onesies or footed pjs, etc.  People like to pick out outfits, and stock changes at stores a lot, so what you have on the registry may not be available.

  • Lol so funny. Everyone tells me Huggies for boys pampers for girls. Guess it's everyone's unique experience.

As a FTM I put a couple boxes on the registry.( Huggies for me I can't stand how pampers smell. )

For the most part I'm avoiding clothes.I did put the little side snap tees with the gloves at the end and some swaddles, gowns, zip up onesies. I'm not dressing them the same So I put 2 of the same brand in different colors, hoping not to get a lot of matchy stuff. I did get some advice to put all the baby Tylenol, gripe water etc on as well.

So exciting we are in the registry stage!
  • @StacyMarie33 - That's what I meant, putting diapers would let people know your preference.  My son and every little boy I know couldn't do huggies.  My son actually went through everything except Pampers.
  • I put some diapers on mine (not many) just so that people knew our brand preference if they wanted to buy those.

We are Team Green so the only clothes I put were onesies.
  • 100% agree that people will end up just buying what they want HOWEVER I put disposables in NB and size 1s on my registry and they were all bought and gifted!

As for clothes, I would put basic whites (onesies,Ts) but other than that people are going to buy you so.many.clothes.

  • I'm not registering from clothes mostly because so many people are telling me they picked up this cute out and that one, etc. But we did put some diapers on there just to remind people, like hey, we need LOTS of these ;)

I don't think it really matters, it's all up to you if you just want to remind people or not. Plus, at my baby shower if you bring some diapers you enter your name to win a little prize :) little things like that at your shower will get people to bring those items.
  • I know people who indicated on their registry (or the shower invite in one case, because there was a diaper raffle) because they wanted particular brands (in her case, it was sensitive ones). As for clothes, my registry person at BBB said they recommend putting a few things on there more so people can see what kinds of things you like, but know that people will pick what they want. :)
  • Babies rus added diapers to my registry. I however DID want them on there so people would know the brand we prefer. (Pampers, my DS always peed out the top of huggies) I did not add any clothes besides onesies, sleep sacks etc.. People will buy you what they want as far as clothes go. :)
  • when I registered at BRU the ladies there advised me not to put clothes on YET. If I want to register for some do it once the seasons change. Many of the things that are there now will not be there once we get ready for our showers (unless of course you are having a shower now or in the next couple weeks or have already gotten your registry info to the attendees of your shower)

  • Okay, decision made.

I decided to add diapers in our preferred brands on the Target registry. Reason: IF people are shopping on the registry and decide they want to buy diapers, at least they'll have and idea of brands we like. (Not that I'm being picky, because I'm not.) Plus it's a cheap gift suggestion.

I decided NOT to add any clothing other than a few basic items on the Target registry and the stuff we already had on the universal/Amazon registry (a few coordinating twin outfits, mostly from Etsy). Reason: First off, not all stores will have the right sizes and there is so much turnover. The stuff right now is mostly summer, too. Secondly, I don't have the first clue what I even like. I think I trust people's taste better than my own :-) Thirdly, I am overthinking it.
