Sudden 3 year-old stuttering

My DS started stuttering overnight about 3 weeks ago. At the beginning it was just who, what, where, when, why, but it now seems to be worse and he has also resorted to whispering and putting his hand in front of his mouth. I called the pediatrician and brought him in and he said it is developmental and will go away. May take a month, a year, but it is getting worse and my poor, once very confident little boy is changing right before my eyes. Has this happened to anyone else with a great outcome? Anyone have any other suggestions where to turn? Thanks in advance.

Re: Sudden 3 year-old stuttering

  • My niece started to stutter around the same age. The ped said the same thing. Now at 13 she still does it. Not as much. Mainly when she is excited or nervous. This has made a shy kid even more reluctant to talk. Even the teachers told my SIL to let it run it's course. They said she only did it conversationaly...never when reading out loud to the class, only when speaking. She did have some speech therapy this year and it does seem to be happening less. If it were my child, I would let it go for a year or so and get therapy if not improving.

The peds advice when it started was to ignore it. Don't help them find the word. Just be patient.

My DD did it around that age.  For her it was a phase.  Please don't make a big deal out of it & don't even tell your DS to slow down.  MANY kids go through this.  Their minds are working so fast, faster than their mouths can handle.  It lasted about 6-9 months with DD (on & off, mostly on) & then pretty much went away.  I know this is not the case for every child & there are some that truly end up with a stutter; however, saying that I haven't come across any of my friends with kids that didn't go through this phase at some point.

  • My son stuttered at that age. It was developmental and he is a well spoken 4.5 year old now. Likely you have nothing to worry about.

  • Thank you very much for your comments.  I have read some about this and have not made a big deal about it and haven't even told him to slow down or anything.  Most of the time he is giving up on his own:(
Thank you again.  I put a call into his pediatrician again today and hopefully it is just a phase:)
  • DD went through that around the time she turned 3, it didn't seem to really bother her though.  Just wait patiently and don't try to finish his thoughts.  I'm not sure when she stopped, in fact I didn't realize it had stopped until I read your post, I guess it disappeared as quickly as it seemed to come on.
