Maternity Clothes Hand-me-downs & switches

For all you FTMs, I HIGHLY recommend asking friends for any maternity clothes they aren't using. My mom came to see me for dinner last night and she brought me a huuuge bin of maternity clothes from my best friend, another garbage bag full of clothes (including a winter coat), and a separate shopping bag full of books on sleep methods, breast feeding, etc. I am rich in maternity clothes now! I'm wearing a cute black maternity top today from her and I'm so comfortable. She seriously saved me soo much money!

Also, another one of my friend has a baby who is 4 months old - her maternity clothes are getting too big on her but her normal clothes don't fit yet - I'm sending her a bunch of pairs of my pants and she's sending me maternity pants also.

Just wanted to share b/c I'm finding my friends who have kids to be very very helpful these days!

Re: Maternity Clothes Hand-me-downs & switches

  • I actually just bought some used maternity clothes off a local for sale group on facebook.  9 tops and 2 jeans for $30 and all are name brand and are in excellent condition.  Pretty good bargain but the swap idea is even better. :)

I only have one friend who wears the same size as me who has had a kid.  After I had #2 and she got pregnant with her first, I gave her ALL my maternity clothes (thinking I was done!).  It was a huge box including two belly bands, two dresses, pajamas, jeans, khakis, capris, shirts, sweaters, a swimsuit and winter coat.  As a teacher, she did need to buy a few extra dressier pieces for work.  I just met up with her for dinner on Monday and she gave me back a really heavy tote full of mostly everything I had given her plus the stuff she had bought herself.  All freshly laundered.  I, too, am now rich in maternity clothes! :)  We dubbed ourselves "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Maternity Pants" and I am soo thankful I don't have to build a whole new wardrobe!!  There is literally only ONE store left within a 45 minute radius of where I live that sells maternity clothes.  And it is Ross, and their clothes run so small that their biggest size doesn't fit me.

  • My cousin just had her last baby and handed me a BUNCH of stuff! I was soo excited I think between that and what I had last time I only need to buy a few sweaters!!

I have zero friends who have even gotten pregnant around me so I wasn't this lucky. And every time I tried to craigslist clothes during my first pregnancy, they never fit quite right. I gave up wasting the money and now I just buy sale items.

I'm in the same situation. I finally caved in and bought some new clothes yesterday. Target had a coupon for 25% off all women's apparel and Buy Buy Baby had a buy 3 get one free promotion that included their clearance items.
  • My sister in law gave me two huge bags the first time around and then gave me another huge bag for this one. I think they've served several pregnancies of different women bc some of the styles are outdated, haha. I just had to buy some leggings and skinny jeans so not too shabby! I fully intend on passing everything on to my other sister in law once I'm done!

  • Yes! Sharing maternity clothes saves a ton. Also, check out thrift stores or yard sales to find maternity--usually in great condition because it's only used for a few months!

I'm in the same boat. My SIL was pregnant at the same time as me last time, so that wasn't going to work. Other than that all of the people I know with kids live far away from me. So, goodwill, old navy sales, and the clearance rack it was. Oh wait, and my mom and aunt gave me the maternity clothes they wore, so I've got a bunch of vintage 80s maternity clothes that weren't all awful. Haha. The original idea works well with baby/kids clothes too.

  • I got most of mine used. I got 5 pair of work pants for $30, when they were  normally $50 a pair!

  • it was my clothes that made the rounds to all my friends.  i've gotten them back but no extras, plus my friends are both also pregnant now (one due a month before me and the other due a month after me).  lol.  oops.
