how long did you use a nursing pillow?

My LO is just about 4 months. I've been using My Brest Friend since day one and I love it. My LO is just really starting to get some head control but we still use the pillow every time I nurse. We are almost always in the football hold because it's so comfortable but occasionally do the cradle hold when I have plugged ducts. I love my pillow but it does suck to haul it around town when I want to nurse her away from home. Do you guys still use your pillow? Am I the only one still using mine after 4 months?

Re: how long did you use a nursing pillow?

  • I still use my Boppy at home and only recently quit hauling it around. LO is almost 8 months old. Now when nursing out and about I either have her straddle me or I support her in a cradle hold. I like my pillow because then it's hands-free nursing. Otherwise I feel like any other position I'm using my hand to support her.

  • I love that the pillow makes it "hands free." I'd rather use my hands to help with latching and stroking her head/arms instead of holding her up. And she is a slow nurser-- like 20 minutes on each side (and she always takes from both sides). Even with the brest friend, I feel like I need to be sitting in an actual chair (not sitting on the floor) so I get some under pillow support where my arms are.

I always see pictures of women nursing without a pillow and I wonder, why not me? Am I the only one who can't nurse without pillow assistance?

  • once DS was sitting well and starting to move around more, like 7-8 months, i stopped using the boppy. DS just started sitting on my lap facing me and nursed that way.

but, i say do whatever works. if the nursing pillow is still helpful for you, then keep using it. :)
  • We use the boppy and I've never taken it out of my home for use.  I can't remember how long I used it at home with DS, but I'd say at least until 6 months.  Still early with DD so we're still using it at home, but like PP, when I'm out, I just make do with whatever is around.
  • Funny, I just put mine away this weekend and commented to my husband that I never used it for nursing.  We tried a few times and it just wasn't comfortable for me.  I thought it would be my lifeline, but I wound up just holding him, either using my legs as support or a pillow under my arm, and never had a problem with it.

Like @Casey78, we had an easy latch though, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

I know that doesn't answer your question, sorry.
  • I used the boppy with DD until around 2 months, but just in the house. I didn't really find it to be necessary, and haven't used it at all with my 2 week old.

  • I'm still using it with my 12 month old. I don't carry it out and about, but when we are home, we use the boppy.

  • I love my Boppy! DD is 7 months old and we still use it at home almost every single time I nurse her, but I have never hauled it around with me. I use it exclusively at home.

  • She's 7 months and I still use a small couch pillow when one is available. I used the boppy probably until about 4ish months. I never used a pillow in public though. I do the cradle hold although it's not very comfortable for me.

  • wow. i feel like a bit of a weirdo because i've brought it out with me (to the beach, to daycare, in the car, etc). When I'm out of the house I keep it in a protective bag so it doesn't get germy/dirty.

    oh well...

  • LO is about 3 mo now. i still use Brest Friend at home because I like having my hands free to do other things. I DID used to lug it around in the beginning but have been practicing nursing without a pillow at home. i'm finally at a point where i feel comfortable nursing without the pillows for support if i needed to.  i don't really use the BOPPY all too much yet - i use it here and there if it's right next to me and i've left the other pillow upstairs, but i use it to prop my elbow or her head only. i don't lay her body on top across because i think it's too curvy.

i say do what you feel comfy with!

  • I knew I was in the minority with this one, but we still use the boppy when my 20 month old nurses before bed :)  It makes her the perfect height to reach my chest, and I don't have to hold her toddler body up!
  • DS is 11 months and we still use the boppy. I actually have 2 and I keep the other one in my car. I use it at the sitters or if I NIP. When he was smaller he couldn't manage without it he would FREAK out. I even took it to lactation support group. I think I could manage without it now in a pinch but it is certainly easier to use it.
  • I still use my Boppy Nursing Pillow all the time at home.  LO is 15 months old, and will actually pick it up and bring it to me when she wants to nurse before bed.  She's also learned how to close the snap on the belt by playing with it a lot.  If you like the pillow and so does LO, who cares!  Keep using it.

  • Like @supriseaddition, we are still using ours at 14 months old pretty regularly and my LO will also bring it over when she wants to nurse. It's just more comfortable for both of us. I've never taken it out with us though, I've used the diaper bag or just the arm rest in the car to rest my arm, or kind of propped up my knee and leaned over.

  • I use the Bobby at home but don't take it out anywhere - DD2 is 6.5 months. I have it upstairs so if I nurse downstairs, I don't use it at all. I prefer using it though and feel it's the most comfortable option for both of us.

My LO is 12.5 months and I still use the Boppy at home--puts her in just the right spot! I get by with a pillow or something else under my arm/elbow if we are away from home.
  • I love my boppy. Took it camping a few months ago. It's awesome that the whole thing can go in the washing machine! But other than that it kinda lives next to the downstairs couch. Ds2 also brings it to me when he's ready to get comfy and nurse before bed. He's 15 months.

  • I had the twin Breast Friend and that thing is huge. I stopped using it in the summer because I got hot. I wasn't tandem feeding, so it wasn't necessary. I still prop baby up on a regular pillow though and he's 9 months.

  • I am still using my Bobby. DD is almost 13 months. We just use it at home. I also have a My Breast Friend pillow that I used until DD was 6 months probably. Love both of them.
  • I love the boppy, DD is 7 months. I have one at home and one in the car.
  • Dd will be 18 months this week. I still use the Boppy pillow. I have never brought it for out and about though.

  • Oh, jeez, I hated the nursing pillow. I'm tall, so if I put DD on it, she was too low, and then I had to use other pillows, and it was just a pain. I think I tried it for a week? Then I used regular pillows for a little while longer, and got rid of everything once she was out and about more frequently.

  • I used the boppy until almost 8 months never carried it around and in fact i had a hard time breastfeeding when not at home!
