Question for PCOS mamas

My sister was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago. She has a 5 yr old but had been having trouble getting pregnant so OB did some testing and diagnosed her. They started her on metformin and then after monitoring her a while started clomid. She's been closely monitored but no luck. This month she had four really good follicles and they said they wouldn't do the shot to make her ovulate bc they didn't want her to have four babies. They told her to do OPKs and she did, but never turned positive. So she didn't ovulate. She's at the point of being ready to give up which breaks my heart.

What advice to you all have? They can't really afford IVF and going to an RE freaks her out (although I'm gently pushing her to go). What did you do that finally resulted in success? Thanks ladies!

I would keep trying to push her to to the RE. They are the ones who are there to get you pregnant, not your OB. The RE can likely tweek her meds for less follies, but healthier follies. Maybe she would respond better to letrozole (and not risk the side effects of Clomid).

I have PCOS as well and I have never ovulated on my own. I went to the RE for a year and a half, went through testing and two rounds of iui's both with no results (last one resulted in a miscarriage. I found Pregnitude on amazon and was amazed by all of the positive reviews. I gave pregnitude a try for a month and and half and I had my first real period ever, first ever positive OPK ever and first positive pregnancy test ever from the good ol natural way. And I'm current 9 weeks along. I can't say enough good things about this product. Have her give it a shot, it's it's a much cheaper route that has no effect on the baby.

Ditto on the go see an RE. There are several things to try before IVF.

She really needs to see an RE. She could get lucky with just clomid, trigger, and TI. Or have better luck with femara (I did.) IUI is also much simpler and cheaper than Ivf so that's an option too. REs make babies, OBs deliver them.

Ditto what other said go to RE. Without proper monitoring it's hard to know what to change. Clomid never made me ovulate and I would have never known that without going to an RE.

I agree with PPs. She really needs to be monitored and do further testing. My BFF tried for a year with an OB after being diagnosed with PCOS. I gently pushed her toward an RE because I could see the OB seemed to just be shooting in the dark w/o doing proper testing. She got pregnant on her first cycle with an RE. It's definitely possible to get pregnant with an OB, but it's definitely second best.
