Vasectomy Reversal

We are considering him getting a vasectomy reversal and not sure of the pros and cons and if its even worth it. I already have two children and he has two children (all from previous relationships), but we want one together. Is it worth it? Opinions/ Advice?

Re: Vasectomy Reversal

  • There's no way anyone can answer that question for you?

  • This is really a discussion between you, your husband, and your doctor. "Is it worth it?" is a hard question to answer because it really depends on the value you put on having a child together, how much your willing to spend in order to have another child (I'm guessing that a reversal will not be covered by insurance), and the success rates of reversals.

If you're sure you want children that are biologically both yours, then vasectomy reversal is usually the recommended first option. It has higher success rates than IVF, especially if you go to a urologist who specializes in the surgery, and is generally less expensive. But it depends on how long it's been since the original procedure. Also, it can take up to a year for success (if it ever happens), so couples in which the female is older may not want to risk waiting that long. Other options include IVF with your husband's sperm (retrieved through aspiration), IUI with donor sperm, or adoption.

My husband and I chose to do the reversal and actually drove out of state to see a specialist who pretty much just does reversals. Since it wasn't covered by insurance, we didn't have to stay in network and with such a large expense, we wanted the best chances. As you can see from my ticker, it worked! If it's something you both think you'd like to pursue, make an appointment with a urologist for a consultation and go from there.

I agree with this poster.  My husband had the VR on March 3rd, and we are currently trying.  Insurance didn't cover ours and we also went to a urologist who ONLY does VR's due to the success rate (and our first SA had sperm).
