Can't stop feeling guilty!

Hi everyone! I have 4 herniated discs in my back and neck and my doc prescribed percocet and lidocain patches for what we call "flare-ups." During these times I cannot function - I can't move my head and arms without unbearable pain and I can't take care of my 2 older kids. The problem is that I cannot get over the guilt of taking the painkillers. I feel like I'm doing something wrong even though my doc says that the percocet is a category B. Luckily I am feeling much better now but this past week I took a pill (or a half) 5 days in a row. I can't stop thinking about it. Does anybody else have any experience with this? I think I just need a reassuring word. Please, no lectures or judgement. I'm 13 weeks BTW. Thanks in advance :-)

Re: Can't stop feeling guilty!

  • I don't know about lidocaine patches, nor do I know about taking percocet while pregnant.  But I did take percocet every 4 hours after my c section when DD was born.  I was EBF.  I would say that if you are prescribed the drugs, and you need them to function, then take them.  The doctor says it's safe, but you may also discuss with your OB just to be sure :)

Also, could you find a women's health PT in your area.  They are amazing, and may be really able to help you through this pregnancy.  I am expecting my third too, and it is hard enough taking care of the older two, adding back pain in the mix may just make it impossible.

Hugs to you!  You are in my T&Ps.

Thank you very much for your response! I am definitely going back to PT and hoping that keeps the flare ups away for the next 6 months. I would really like to not have to take anything for the rest of the pregnancy!

  • I don't know anything about pain meds and pregnancy but I know a doctor would never needlessly put your baby at risk. It sounds like taking pain medication is the best thing you can do for yourself and your kids so you're doing the right thing. In sorry I can't be more helpful but you shouldn't feel guilty for taking care of your family. T&Ps for peace, clarity, health and happiness.

  • Thank you all, I really do feel a lot better so I'm glad I reached out :x
  • Not to scare you but in my nursing medication handbook, Percocet is listed as category C and it's also listed as that on FDA website
  • I was in a car accident at 8 weeks and the ER didn't listen to my husband and they gave me morphine which is also a category C. Baby is fine and so am I.
  • Did you OB give them to you? Or was it a dr prior to being pregnant. I have debilitating migraines and i was told i couldn't take the pain pills (vicodin) nor the topical that i use. (Tiger balm). He will give me fioricet once im in 2nd tri. Ive also used lidocaine patches before but i dont have experience taking them during pregnancy. Truthfully all DRs differ on these subjects.

If your OB prescribed them (or knows you are taking them) i wouldn't worry. Sometimes what the pain does to the mother outweighs the risk (which is category c so listed as unknown) feel better lady!

  • If your doctor has prescribed it, feel confident that he believes it is safe for you to take it as prescribed. Category B means there have been studies in pregnant animals and no adverse effects on the fetus were observed even at high doses. The doses you are prescribed are likely much lower than what was given to the animals, increasing the likelihood the dose for you us safe. Try not to worry and try to not let other people make you feel guilty for taking meds you clearly need.

  • If doctor told you it was safe and it's a category B I wouldn't feel guilty at all. You absolutely need it to take care of yourself and your other children.

I had swimmers ear a few weeks back and the only medication are ear drops that for some crazy reason are a category C med. There wasn't anything else I could take and my doctor(s) couldn't let it go untreated as it would get worse (not to mention I was in a lot of pain, so much so it was difficult to sleep at night). Eventually I was given the OK to take the drops just until my ear felt better (not the usual 10 day recommended timeframe). I only took them for a couple days and while I did feel guilty, I knew I couldn't let it go untreated. You do what you have to do. Hope you feel better soon!!!!
  • I had to take them last trimester due to similar back issues and everything was fine! If you need them to function then in sure your doc is looking out!
