Anyone NOT doing the cvs screening?

I was talking to my boyfriend and we are considering not doing the screening. We feel that regardless of what happens it won't change our decision. I'm a bit on the fence as I would feel better knowing. To him, I guess ignorance is bliss and we just pray our baby is healthy?

Anyone else not doing the testing? Just curious as to what thoughts are and pros/cons.

Re: Anyone NOT doing the cvs screening?

  • I'm not doing it. I'm low risk and it wouldn't affect our decision one way or another.

  • We are not doing it either. This is our second child and we didn't do it with our daughter either. We believe that God will give us what we can handle and just pray for a healthy baby.

I understand why those who choose to do it, do it: peace of mind knowing that everything is ok or doing research and having a plan. I also know some people who do it just for the extra ultrasound.

I personally have two friends who were told their child would have down syndrome and they didn't. All the tests did was cause them worry.

I think it's a personal preference and there's no right or wrong. It's whatever is right for you and your SO.

    Congrats by the way!
  • We're not doing it either.  We didn't have it done with our son either.  I'll probably have the quad marker screening done in the 2nd trimester, but that's it.  I didn't have the NT scan either.

  • I agree with the others. We didn't do the testing the first time around and won't this time either. Unless you would terminate the pregnancy I don't see any reason to take the chance with the test. Good luck to you in whatever you decide!

CVS is not a standard screening and involves risks. I'm surprised it would be offered to you without reason.
We were offered a CVS for this pregnancy because we found out that I have a premutation for Fragile X but we decided against it for many reasons. Our risks of Fragile X are only about 1.8%. With CVS there is risk for a miscarriage and we did not want to take that risk, especially because we would not terminate even if this baby does have Fragile X. We did go to an MFM consult about it just for the heck of it and he said I wouldn't be a candidate anyway even if we did want it because I have a tilted uterus and my placenta is behind the baby so I am in the 1% of patients he wouldn't be able to get a sample from. Additionally, I already have two subchorionic hemorrhages and he would not stick a needle into an already bleeding placenta (nor would I).
He did offer us an amnio in a few weeks but we will be declining that as well.

  • DH and I won't be doing the test. We aren't at risk for it plus I wouldn't terminate the pregnancy anyway. Its really just peace of mind and personal preference.
  • I think some of you are talking about the NT scan which is an ultrasound. The CVS uses a needle to take a sample of the placenta.

  • We aren't doing it. This pregnancy is slightly high risk but the risk of the test just isn't worth it to us since the result wouldn't change anything that we are doing.

  • We are having an NT scan in a few weeks but I probably wouldn't even consider a CVS. I think I will be happy with the NT scan and blood test.

  • I agree with PP, I don't know why CVs would be recommended before NT. If I were you I would talk to your doctor about your options.
  • I'm not doing any types of tests beyond blood work and one ultrasound. I have no reason to suspect there is anything wrong with this pregnancy, and even if a doctor suggested it, I wouldn't go along with it.

  • No cvs. I had an nt scan and they suggested i do the harmony test due to medical history. I've actually never seen CVS offered as routine unless there were issues with the quad screen or the nt scan.

I think you may be confused by the test lingo. As PP have mentioned, CVS isn't standard, if you are low risk you wouldn't have it even offered to you. You are probably confusing its with the NT. There are a lot of anagrams thrown at us, it can be hard to keep them straight.

  • We're not doing it, and we haven't for our last 3 either. We're not high risk for what it tests for, though.

  • I never did with my first two (I was 32 and 34, respectively, when I had them). With this one I'm doing the blood screening and NT scan because I'm AMA, but no invasive screening. I will not do an amnio or CVS, even if my risks come back high.

  • As others have mentioned a CVS is not a screening....it is a a procedure to run diagnostic tests. The only time it is offered is if part of your combined NT screen or cell free DNA test comes back high risk. If that is the case you are offered CVS or amino depending on how far along you are.

  • I am not doing any additional tests beyond the required blood work and ultrasounds for the same reasons a lot of others have said. My doctor said that during the anatomy scan they will look closely at the organs and a lot of problems will show up as red flags with some of the organs. So if the ultrasound tech found any red flags we would reevaluate additional blood work and scans but no matter what we would not do a CVS. We just pray and trust that God wouldn't give us anything we can handle. :)
  • Are you talking about CVS or the NT scan? I am doing the NT Scan. If results don't look good with that I'd consider CVS but I wouldn't jump straight to CVS unless directly by a doctor. It's invasive and there is a miscarriage risk.
  • Not doing it. I have Diabetes and am high risk but don't care to chance it and it wouldn't change anything. I'll be getting a Level 2 ultrasound but that's about it.
  • The only test I am having done is the Level 2 (the only one we had with our DD as well) which is required by our doctor's office. I definitely don't knock anyone who does testing-we just decided not to with either baby.
  • We chose not too. Not high risk. Plus, after researching it, it just makes people worry more. I understand why people do it but, we wouldn't terminate regardless. Plus, I am more concerned with the atanomy scan and want to make sure all of the organs are okay.

Yes, I misread. I was thinking of the NT testing.
  • I agree with all comments. I am not doing it. I had it done with DS and had cramping for 2 days after. Then had many comic actions with the placenta. Not proven but I believe it was because of the procedure.
  • We opted for the harmony test instead of the cvs or amino. It is less invasive and gives you a pretty significant certainity of any of the major chromosomal defects. If the results come back and detect something abnormal, we may opt for cvs or amino depending on the timing. It's important for us to know because unlike most of the people who replied, it may affect our decision. I believe the harmony test is a standard of care for high risk pregnancies which we are not, so we will probably pay out of pocket for the test. I was told it is $800.
