Fertility and ASD

Sorry, this is a bit of a mixed post since it's partly about trying to conceive but most on the TTC boards don't really understand my fear.

I've been doing some research about possible connections between fertility treatments and autism. Just wondering if any of you have more information.

We did an insemination procedure with ovulation inducing drugs (Clomid) to conceive DS. We have been trying to conceive a second one for over 2 years now and considering doing another insemination. I'm just on the fence about the drugs. It is possible for the procedure to work without drugs (I do ovulate) but the possibility of getting pregnant doubles using Clomid. If we do it, we will be paying for the procedure out of pocket with no insurance coverage so higher chances of success are attractive. But with DS's recent dx, I'm not sure.
Sadly, a part of me wonders if it's just not meant to be at all. That I pushed nature the first time for DS as well...

Re: Fertility and ASD

  • Thanks auntie. Was hoping you would answer.

You are right - it isn't the only path of guilt I've found. :-/

No ICSI. I don't think I have it in me to go for IVF at all.

DS was a premie (4 weeks early but small fr gestational age at almost 4 punds). Not a late baby - I was 26 when we started TTC, 29 when he was born, and DH was 34. I was healthy and active throughout the entire pregnancy. Just 32 weeks on, baby's growth slowed. We do not know what caused that.

Thanks again, I feel a bit better making the decision without major links between the two.
