C-sections

2nd child c section

My hubby and I are TTC I have a 3 1/2 year old who was born via emergency c section. My first labor was very traumatic and I don't intend on doing a vbac for my second child, my doctor usually performs c sections for the second birth if the first was c section. I'm just wondering if there is a way for my body to go into labor naturally or if I will have to have a scheduled c section.

I'm looking to hear other stories of second time c sections! I am a little nervous and scared and unsure of what to expect because my first birth went terribly wrong and I wound up having to be put under and had an emergency c section after 20 hours of labor and resulted in my son being in the NICU for 8 days. I appreciate any and all stories!!

  • Oh gosh. Well, yes. You could go in to labor prior to your scheduled date. You would tell them when u arrive at hospital that your doctor is planning a CS.

A planned CS should be far less traumatic. Unless a medical reason, you should be awake for procedure. Recovery should be better too since you won't have labored prior.

I've had 2CS. First was due to breach baby. Second just a RCS. I'm actually 10 post CS#2 right now.

I think it will be significantly better for you this time. GL!

  • Thank you. I think I would rather go Into labor naturally and then have my doctor perform a c/s. It's def something I would like to talk to my doc about to see what is medically the safest route. Going into labor on my own feels much more natural the having a scheduled c/s. I'm not against the second C/s just wanted to know my options surrounding it.

I had an emergency c with my first who was also born early due to pre-e. My second I planned on a c-section from the get go but my water broke at home and contractions started. Even though I went into labor my doctor came and I had my planned c-section. If you go into labor you just want to get your butt to the hospital before the contractions get too bad. I just remember having a hard time sitting still for my spinal because the contractions were kicking my butt. Other then that all went as planned. Good luck!

  • I too had a bad experience the first time around.
I try to look at it this way - DS and I had a rough start but today we are A.O.K.
As to your question about whether your body will go naturally? -- Yes, I believe it can. I am on a progesterone shot to stay pregnant. DD is due next month and our goal is to make it to 37 weeks. My OB has stated that I could go into labor after the last shot wears off, or I could make it to the scheduled date. No matter what its a CS. My OB has also stated that she has seen first babies go with a few bumps on the road, and then the second goes perfectly as designed. You just never know. Your OB knowing your history will change everything the second time around. You will probably not go through labor (at least not that long) bc a CS is not an option. So the trauma of that will disappear, if not entirely.
  • Since your dr won't do vbac and you have to have another c-section, if you go into labor they will most likely do an emergency c-section when you get to the hospital. That's what my ob will do, I can't do vbac at my hospital either. But your dr should should schedule around 39 weeks for a c-section.

I had 2 c/s...the first was unplanned and second was scheduled.  The experiences were very different, and the 2nd, planned c/s, went so smoothly and recovery was so much easier.  From my understanding, if you know you'll be having a c/s, it will be scheduled prior to the date, usually around 39 weeks.  A few people I know who were potentially going to attempt a VBAC, were allowed to go to their due date, but then had a scheduled section if they hadn't gone into labor on their own by then.  I attribute not having to go through the stress that your body goes through during labor, as a big factor in why my second c/s was so much easier.  The whole experience was better - I could talk to the doc beforehand about my wishes (seeing the baby right away, not having them leave for the nursery while I was still in the OR, etc...), being able to do some research about my options, etc...it was really a great experience the second time.

  • I also had a C-section under general anesthesia with my 1st.  I had a scheduled C-section with #2 but didn't want to have it too early.  It was performed at 39w5d.

    I am having #3 scheduled at 39w6d.

Not that I really want to go into labor, but the later you schdedule, the more likely you are to go into labor.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • I went into labor over 2 weeks before my scheduled c section.  I called my OB after several hours of consistent contractions and she sent me to L&D.  I was monitored for awhile to make sure they were the real deal and once I was admitted things happened very quickly.  I'm surprised at how quickly they rounded up the surgical team at 1am, but I had a spinal and was much more aware of everything going on than with my first who was a c/s after a failed induction.

Recovery has had some issues this time, but overall the actual c-section experience was much better than my first one.

  • Both my girls were born via c/s. The first was because I was 11 days overdue and she showed NO signs of moving. At. All. Plus she had a rather large head. Instead of trying an induction first my OB and I decided just to go straight to a c/s. With my 2nd I had a midwife who was pro VBAC but respected any decision I made. Around 24 weeks I decided I did not want to try for a VBAC so a repeat c/s was scheduled and I gave birth at 38w6d. Recovery was faster the second time around, as  knew what I was in for (pain-wise, etc).
