I really love this name. Does your mind go straight to serial killer? That's my only drawback but maybe that will change now that the series is over.

Some people will make the connection, but plenty of people have never even heard of the show. If you like it, go for it.

I'm normally a lurker but I have to speak up.

We named our son Dexter and we get asked by pretty much everyone we tell his name to "Like Laboratory or the serial killer?"

I always just say we love the name and the association doesn't matter to us. But just in case we are going to teach him "The Code" when he gets older.

I also agree with PP that 10 years from now I doubt it will really matter.

It isn't the first thing I go to because I love the name! I think a lot of people will ask you about it and that may be annoying but I don't think it will be overwhelming for him actually he may even find it badass since he is a "good" murderer haha

I too am a huge fan of the series so yes, that's where my mind goes when I hear dexter. Like others have said though, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and it's such a cute name despite the associations! We considered it for our son too

And it just sounds ultra-nerdy to me, and yet trendy at the same time.

I think b/c it's a relatively uncommon name, people are likely to remember the association for a while. It's different with names that have a lot of other associations as well, kwim?

I agree with this. It was the title of a pretty major show AND the main character's name, not just a character on a popular show named something else. Plus, It's unique enough to hold more association.

Since I do like the name yet I love the show, I couldn't name him that since people would know I chose it all the while knowing it's serial killerness. If you didn't love or watch the show though, I wouldn't worry about it and you would just say that you liked it and move on.

I do definitely think of the show but I still like the name. I wouldn't worry about what other people may associate the name with, that's their problem not yours.

My mind does but I am a big fan of the show. My mind doesn't go there in a bad way though, I really like the character and I think it is a cool name so I say go for it!

I never saw the show though I do know of it's existence. I would immediately think of Dexter's Laboratory but I love Dexter as a cartoon and as a name. I say go for it!
