Traveling with baby alone!

I'm not sure if this was a previous discussion or not but thought I would start a new one instead of looking for an old one.  Anyway, I will be flying with my LO back to Michigan from Denver at the end of August and I'll be traveling by myself.  I'm trying to figure out the best way to travel with her. I'm debating on if I should bring a stroller or just check her carseat and wear her in the baby carrier through the airport.  Keep in mind I will also be holding her diaper bag that is a backpack style and maybe have my own carry-on bag as well.  Thoughts??  Thanks!

Re: Traveling with baby alone!

  • Definitely wear her in the airport! She should really ride in her car seat with her own ticket to be safest. If that's not possible it's probably most convenient to wear her on the plane but don't fool yourself into thinking it's safer.

  • I've traveled frequently with both babies by myself on cross-country flights, and I prefer to have a stroller so that I can have my hands/body free to go to the bathroom and that sort of thing.  Then I gate check the stroller.  But I know that many women prefer to baby-wear.

I would try to make sure that you only have baby and one backpack - check anything else if you're by yourself and it will make your trip easier.

I also only fly with a carseat and purchase a seat for baby.  I like to have that extra space, it's safer, and then I don't have to worry about my carseat getting damaged while checked, or have to worry about renting a seat that has an unknown history.

  • A checked car seat (either gate checked or luggage checked) should be considered crashed and replaced right away.  The only safe way for a baby to fly is in their own seat, in their car seat.

  • I have the BOB stroller with adaptor to put the car seat on it and wondered if anyone else has tracked with that whole setup and if it was easy to gate check or not? And I get the whole thing that it's safer to have baby fly in her own car seat but honestly it just won't work for me puns I already purchased my ticket. Do u think the baggage guys really destroy our stuff when we check it?

Yes we've taken the bob and adapter on a couple trips and we just took the wheels off to put the bob in the gate check stroller bag. I would probably not want to mess with that if I were traveling alone, but it worked fine when I was with DH. Yes I do think the luggage gets thrown around, but I'd feel better gate checking rather than regular checking - it probably gets thrown around less.

Did anything happen to your stroller or carseat when you gate checked it?  Just wondering if I did that instead of just checking my carseat at the counter if it would be better so that I don't have to worry about my carseat getting super destroyed!

Hi, @alake.  I know you from August 2012....
I remember you as well.  We adopted a little girl who was a Feb baby in April.  I don't spend much time on this board, but check it out here and there.

I've never gate checked a car seat - I always buy a seat for baby and bring it on the plane. We gate check the stroller in a bag, and the bag often comes back sort of beat up/dirty/wet.
