Big kid bed: Do you use the boxspring?

Is a boxspring even necessary?

Re: Big kid bed: Do you use the boxspring?

  • We didn't although I'm not sure why.  I think my older DD's bed didn't need it and we just didn't bother with #2's.  They're both in queens and the beds were already pretty high, we didn't need to make it taller!

  • No, we don't use one, won't for DS's either.  They're only necessary if the bedframe doesn't have a support built into it.  DD's we can go either way & it's height adjustable.  Right now it'd just be too tall & a longer way to fall.
  • We use one for DD's bed.

  • I don't.  DD's bedtop would've been 36" off the ground if we did..and she was barely that tall at the time!  We use a bunkie board under the mattress instead.

  • When my kids 1st moved into twin beds, we used just the mattress on the floor.  After about a year, we added the boxspring to give it more height but we didn't have the bed on a frame.  My older DD got a trundel bed this fall and it is so high.  We don't use the box spring with it.  You can't on the trundle bed and the main bed is designed to not use one.  I really think it depends on the bed.

  • Yes, I think a bed looks more complete with the boxspring. He has a stool to get up to his bed.

  • I've seen this question before and I'm always confused: Unless you're just putting the mattress directly on the floor (which we've done) doesn't the bed you have dictate whether you need to use the boxspring? I've never owned a bed where it's a choice to either use one or not use it.
  • PAC has a loft bed, so we just use the board under the mattress. We probably would have used the box spring, though, if we got him a regular bed. He'd have just had his stool next to it.

You're right. I think the bed choice has a lot to do with whether you use the boxspring or not. I was just trying to figure out if it's even necessary. DS's bed uses the boxspring, and it's really high, but the bed requires the use of the boxspring, or a bunkie board, I guess. Just seeing what goes on in others' homes.

I generally like a style of bed that does not require a boxspring, but I love the look of a beautiful bedskirt. Not sure what we'll get. We're a ways out from purchasing, maybe 6 months or so, provided she doesn't start climbing out of her crib.

  • We planned not to, because of the height of the bed for her climbing in and out, but ended up having to because without the box spring, there would have been like a 1' gap between the top of the matress and the bottom of the headboard.  We just got a sturdy wooden step stool at Target for the end of her bed until she could climb in and out on her own without it.
  • I use one of the beds for children. Once my baby slept on a mattress on the floor but the bunk bed is a very practical solution and my baby loves it. Now very much appreciated.
  • DS's bed is already raised, with drawers underneath, so he doesn't need a boxspring.

DD's bed will eventually "need" a boxspring. Her bed is lower to the ground, which is fine for a three years old, but it kind of bugs me.

  • We do. But it's a smaller version, about half the height if a regular box spring, made for kids. She has a step stool to get into bed.
