Rolling?

Probably a stupid question, but bear with my FTM-ness... So LO can now roll over. Is this a sleep concern in any way, or do we just go about life as we always did? DH is worried she'll land on her face and not be able to fix that.

Re: Rolling?

  • DD started rolling over about a month ago and we had the same concern. Pediatrician says once they roll there's not much you can do. If they want to sleep on their stomach they will. She also told us that if they have the strength to roll over then they have the strength to not be stuck on their face and to just carry on.

  • I was searching this and ended up here :) A14 mom here. But last night we heard a blood curdling cry around 1:30am and DD was face down and stuck that way in her crib. She was (until last night) still swaddled with one arm. It scared the crap out of me! She hasn't mastered rolling from stomach to back yet and she had only rolled back to front 2x before last night. So if I start using the sleep sack and she rolls over, will she still be able to get back? Or does she need her legs to propel her? She sleeps like shit aka not at all- if not swaddled in some way...
  • Rolling equals swaddles and rnp go bye-bye. Theoretically they can maneuver their noggin so they can breathe on their belly.

If she is rolling AT ALL, you ditch the swaddle. It will freaking suck and I'm dreading it with dd, but it isn't safe for them to be swaddled when they can roll...as you discovered.

Yes, they need their legs to propell. A lot of rolling is in the hips and to swing those hips the legs help. Sleep sacks are ok for rollers. You'd be surprised how much they can maneuver with them on.

  • What about swaddling with both arms out- so not in the sleep sack, which does seem to have more leg room, but in the swaddleme. Will her legs be too constricted to roll back over if she tries?

    Does this make sense?
