Children's magazines

Has anyone subscribed to any children's magazines yet? I want to subscribe to one of the animal magazines because DD loves animals and we can also use pictures from the magazine when we are done for art but I'm not sure which one I should get.

Re: Children's magazines

  • We have been getting the toddler Highlights magazines, but aren't renewing. I didn't think they were that good.

  • I'm thinking either Ranger Rick Jr. or National Geographic Little Kids.

  • have not even thought about that. Would make for a great bday or holiday present from a family member. A gift that kept giving without so much toy clutter..... will have to mentally file that idea away.

  • gotta love the internet. A quick search and a list of 10 potential ideas pop up! The second one sounds the most promising for where my LO is at now ... love the supposed "sturdy board book" format. homeschooling.about.com/od/toppicks/tp/mags4toddlers.htm

  • hummm.... at those prices (at least for the two I looked at), I could get a book or two depending on the cost) & then wouldn't be going through the mail, touching other postage (recalling back when the anthrax in mail scare was going on - knew a family that stopped allowing their child to get the mail/tocuh the mail because of it)

  • We already let DD touch the mail. She helps me check it and bring it into the house. I ended up ordering both magazines I mentioned above. They are not super expensive. I think she will be very excited when she gets a magazine with animals in the mail. If we like them I'll suggest renewals as Christmas and birthday gifts. I checked out this website https://www.parents-choice.org/award.cfm?p_code=p_per&thePage=magazine

  • We have been doing Highlights Hello because we got a free 6 month subscription when we ordered DD's school (daycare) pictures from Lifetouch in the spring.  She likes it when it comes, but doesn't look at it for more than 5 minutes.  I'm on the fence of trying the next step up (Highlights High Five - $2.91/issue on amazon) to see if she's more interested in that.

Also looking at National Geographics Little Kids ($2.50/issue on amazon), and Babybug ($2.55/issue on amazon).
  • I loved ranger rick as a kid. Thanks for bringing these up, they are such a good idea.

  • @kjsmith9‌ - I'm not sure how long they will hold her attention either. That's part of the reason I went with the animal ones. She loves looking at animals and I think we can use the animal pictures for art projects when she is no longer interested. I just discovered mod podge and I know there are a lot of cute things I can do with them.

  • I just wanted to update everyone. We have now received our first issue of Ranger Rick Jr. And National Geographic Little Kids. Of the two I prefer Ranger Rick Jr. It seems to have more in it and it is a regular sized magazine. National Geographic Little Kids is smaller, the height is smaller. It does have pull out cards with animals on them which I think is cool, but I still prefer the other one.

In terms of DD, she seems also prefer RRJ. We just got NGLK yesterday and she brought RRJ to me today to read. Usually she'll want me to read through it a couple of times and even though we've had it for a week she still likes to look at it. She hasn't ripped any pages but she does crumple up the NGLK pull out animal cards. She does that with money too. I think maybe she thinks it's trash. Anyway, overall I don't regret buying either and while DD is too young for some things in the magazines, she does enjoy them and I feel like we are getting our money's worth. Just thought I would share in case anyone is considering a subscription.
