Constant crying?

DD is a little over a week old and it seems like she is always crying when she is awake. I want to read to her or have her start on tummy time but if she is not eating or sleeping she is crying. Is this just a phase that newborns go through?? Any suggestions?

  • Is she crying when being held or when put down? I think under 1-2 months old most babies just want to be held all the time. Many if them also want to be moving while being held (e.g., rocked, bounced in arms). Don't worry about tummy time so early on, just try to enjoy snuggles with your newborn. If she is crying while being held, try swaying or gently bouncing her in your arms while "sshhhh" ing. You might want to check out Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Also, white noise typically helps to calm newborns -- either the vent in your kitchen, the vacuum, the sound of a hair dryer.... Good luck and hang in there! It's all normal.
  • @giggler25‌ thanks for the advice! She definitely hates being put down so she always has to be in our arms, but I will try rocking or swaying with her.

  • My daughter is 10 weeks old and it is only the past couple weeks that I can put her down on her playmat or in her swing for a few minutes without crying. Based on what I've read from other moms, it is totally normal. Congrats!!!
  • Yes newborns cry, and often its because they need to be held cuddled and snuggled. Just think about if you are cuddled up warm in your bed in a dark warm room with a soft gentle sway and then all of a sudden you are in a bright cold still room by yourself. Unpleasant. Enjoy all the cuddles and snuggles!

Totally normal.  When babies are so young, they love to be super close.  @giggler25 had good tips... the 5 S's helped.  Depending on LO's size, you may be able to start wearing her if you need to get some things done.  Enjoy the cuddles, they don't stay this tiny for long!
