Toddlers: 24 Months+

Easy way to block bunk bed ladder?!

So DS1 sleeps on a bunk bed.  DS2 recently discovered the ladder.....he is 17 months old.  Any gadgets or easy ways to block him from going up the ladder without having to remove the ladder daily?

Your oldest really isn't old enough for the bunk on a bunk bed if he's as young as I can guess by your younger son's current age and the pic you have in your sig. I would take the bunkbed apart and set it up as a single twin/full/whatever (or two if you need the additional bed)- it seems that most are capable of this.

My apology, if he's just a really young looking 6yo. But, I'm guessing 3, maybe 4 at most- and that is much too young to be on the top bed of a bunk bed.

If I remember correctly, you posted on another thread your son is three. I would have to agree with pp, he is way too young to be on a top bunk. Just the thought of that is terrifying to me. My son just fell out of his bed about 15 minutes ago. A fall like that from a bunk could break bones, or worse.

  • yes, my son is 3.  i thank you for your opinion, but i politely disagree.  Not all 3 year olds may be, but ee is very ok with sleeping on the top bunk.  He has been sleeping in a twin bed since he was 17 months and has NEVER fallen off of the bed and he in fact has even more barriers to prevent him from falling out of the bed then if he were in a toddler bed.  He knows the top bunk is for sleeping, not for playing and I am not in the least bit concerned with it.  My concern is for my 17m old that is trying to climb the ladder.

  • We purchased bunk beds for my boys. The paperwork says a minimum of six years old for the top bunk, so we have them set up as two twin beds.

If you don't want him climbing the ladder take it down.

But really the answer is make two twin beds and not have two toddlers sleep in bunk beds FFS. Hmm

  • I forgot that I can't ask a simple question on here without being judged on how to be a parent.  No wonder I dont frequent these boards much anymore.

_eye roll_ I don't think it's just the Bump Boards that will judge you for this one.

OK glad you know me so well, cause no one IRL has said anything.  Not to mention that my brother was on a top bunk at 3, my nephew at 4, my niece at 3.5.   But please, judge away....

  • I don't have any suggestions.  Maybe just shut the door to the room?  And teach DS to do the same but I wouldn't rely on a 3 yr old for that.  You may just have to watch like a hawk.  I have had several friends have their 4 year olds on top bunks with no issues.   I do want to get them for the boys and am waiting (as long as possible) for DS2 to outgrow his crib, DS1 will be close to 5 hopefully.  I think I want a full/twin one and I like the ladder (actually stairs) my friends have.  Full so they could sleep together if they perfer...
