Hcg questions. Update

Hi everyone, I became pregnant after out first IUI attempt on June 28th. Since then my beta and progesteron levels have just been crappy. My RE has been telling me for 2 weeks she thinks it's ectopic. I went in today (5 weeks) for another blood test and she did an ultrasound because I was in pain yesterday. Before the ultrasound she said my numbers were too low to see anything other then if something had burst and I had free fluid. Well, she actually did see something and that something is in my uterus, not my tube, thank God. But my hcg came back as only 380 (exactly double from 2 days ago) and progesteron is only 3. I've mentally prepared myself as much as I can to expect a miscarriage. I'm just curious how she was able to see anthing which such low levels. Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: Hcg questions. Update

  • I haven't had levels in that mid zone ... only higher for my DS and lower for my unsuccessful situations. Doubling in 2 days would make me think you might have some hope, though. I know people have started low and been successful. Beta Base (https://www.betabase.info/chart/basic/single) has successful ones with low hcg numbers. I'm glad that you didn't see anything in your tubes, and hope that this works out for you! Good luck.

  • Thanks for the positive thoughts. I am on progesteron (100mg suppository, 2/day). My doctor told me today to stop the progesteron (I'm not) because I think she's certain this will end and I don't know I guess the progesteron will just prolong it? Anyway, not much for me to do now...sit and wait.

I agree with TJ-something does not sound right here....

Your beta doubled and that is great. It is low, but that does not mean you are out. Something is in your uterus and that is excellent.

Sometimes an IUI can get off to a slow start and you can't pinpoint fertilization, so things may be ok.

I agree with not stopping progesterone. Oral and vaginal progesterone supps do not show up accurately in blood work, but PIO will.

    Good luck!

  • I am seeing an RE and I've been very happy with her so far. I'm not happy with her basically giving up before we know if we should be giving up. She feels because my levels are so low, and have been very sluggish it's definitely not a viable pregnancy. But she also thought it was ectopic until today. I go back Monday morning for another test. I will continue with my suppositories until then and if the number is still going up, I will ask for the PIO as well.

Are there more questions I should be asking her? I'm just so new to this, I feel kind of lost. My head is telling me the doctor is the expert, listen to her. But, for my whole entire life to this point when someone has told me I couldn't do something or told me something I didn't want to hear, I did my absolute best to prove them wrong and 9 times out of 10, I did.  I'm not saying I have control over what happens with this pregnancy, but I'm not willing to give up until their is proof that it is not viable.

I think not giving up is the way to go right now. You are doing everything you can, and until you KNOW it isn't viable, keep fighting the good fight! I am of course hoping that this is viable and just off to a slow start.

I would start PIO ASAP. If a higher progesterone will help things, it needs to be done now, not Monday.

If your doc hesitates, just explain that you want to give this pregnancy every chance you can before giving up. It's honest, and something she should respect. It is not unreasonable of you to feel that way!

  • Thank you, I will call the doctor first thing in the morning.
  • So my doctor has stopped checking hcg and progesteron levels. I'm now 6 weeks she was able to see the embryo on ultrasound this week. She said she will be tracking it thru ultrasound from here on out. Still confused about my levels, she was certain I would miscarry by now. I haven't, so I'm happy and continue to be casiously optimistic. Thanks for the good thoughts and advice!
  • Woo hoo! What a great update! I'm so glad you fought through!

FX for your lil bean to hang tight!!!!
