I am 13 weeks today and just realized I have been taking a supplement with Chromimum picolinate in it. Ire asthma can cause birth defencts. Any know anything about this??? I am freaking out!!!
Thank you, I put a call in right away was waiting for a call back and needed to vent!! Spoke with pharmacist and they said no trials have linked it to anything except in mice
There are very few clinical trials that include pregnant women at all though--sort of an ethical issue there. Hopefully you hear from the doctor soon, is it possible to stop taking it?
Thanks ladies, it isn't a critical supplement just didn't realize the danger. The pharmacist eased my mind. I mean if there is no research on human fetus I feel a little better
All I will add is that I have a masters degree in chemistry and one of my graduate advisors is a specialist in heavy metal toxicity including chromium. She is adamant that not only is chromium not needed in your supplements (it's found in nature ESP water etc) but that taking it in that form is rather dangerous. I do not take any supplements with chromium and I do not allow my DH to do so either. This is highly debated in the science field though so decide what you feel most comfortable with, I do not risk it personally.

Interesting! I just meant it is an essential mineral, I don't know much about it beyond that! Other than it reminds me of Erin Brockovich.
I may be biased, but I would listen to the pharmacist.
Eh I have gotten some really terrible advice from pharmacists. I am glad you are talking to your Dr.

Thanks, the pharmacist looked it up in a book from the health dept. I spoke with a nurse at the dr and she said she was unaware of major risks, but to mention it to my dr when I have my next appt. unfortunately that's in 2 weeks. From my internet research there seems to be only one study that linked high levels of chromium given in late pregnancy to mice which resulted in skeletal birth defects. I feel like there would be more studies if it was a serious risk. I mean I am honestly trying to just tell myself what's done is done and hope for the best!
@aggiebug Not all pharmacists suck! @camilu87 You're talking about Hexavalent Chromium, which is undoubtedly very unsafe for anyone. Chromium picolinate is a different salt.

Oh by no means do I think they all suck. I really didn't mean that but I have had a major run of bad luck with them.
That is in part because I have been dealing with them in relation to my animal patients and they do the best they can but you just don't get the training for animals. I don't blame them, but I do with they would listen when I try and help so we stop having the same repeat problems.
But I also asked about a medication with an expectorant and they handed me benadryl >_< just plain benadryl.

That's a little ridiculous. Pharmacists aren't trained in animal science. A few may go on to work with animals, but the average pharmacist wouldn't know a whole lot about them. We had a girl in our pharmacy class that ALWAYS asked, "How would that work in a cat?" Our professors didn't appreciate it much, because they didn't know!
@sunshine525 I know and I actually sympathize. Many corporate pharmacies are advertising for pet meds and the pharmacist just don't know. I would hate to be in their position. It's just the constant same pharmacy same prescription problem after we have called and explained that gets frustrating. I am always nice about explaining because again I understand.
It's really the few people med questions that have I asked have made me doubtful recently.

Just wanted to introduce to those that don't know, that this is a highly debated topic in science so you will find doctors and nutritionists on both sides of this topic. Just so everyone is aware. Science is constantly changing to what latest research shows and sometimes there is a long time before decisions are finally made. I have personal experience with one side of the debate so obviously that's where I stand but there is scientists on both sides. Good luck

ETA: different form, not salt. I'm sleepy.
