@addysensmommy‌ oh my! Why so much?
  • And I thought 4 was a lot. I kept thinking "remember I'm small! I'm going to have to replace this blood!"

  • My first appointment they took a lot.
I can't remember how many tubes (I wasn't looking), but I just about threw up because I could hear it squirt in the tubes. Yuck. Not looking forward to my next blood draw.

  • I had 5 today also, I wasn't sure the last large tube was going to fill...it took forever and she still had to do 2 smaller tubes!! Not really sure what they were all for, I should have probably asked.

  • They've always taken at least 4 from me for each appointment for each pregnancy. I just assume they have a lot of tests to do.

  • They took 5 today at my apt too. I got really lightheaded and almost passed out. I had eaten a good breakfast, but it was almost lunchtime by the time I was at my apt. I'm slightly anaemic, so that doesn't help.

  • Yep...I had 6 taken at the lab on Wednesday! It sucks, but from what I remember of DD's pregnancy, that's the worst of it. Unless you have to do the 3 hour glucose tolerance test...then they take 4 vials. Still not as bad as 6, though!

They take 4 at each of your appointments? Yikes! That sounds miserable. Do you know why they take so much, so often? I've only had blood drawn at a handful of appointments.

  • My 1st appt. I had 14 vials!! I thought that was normal lol but I had all kinds of blood work including genetic testing....
  • I haven't had any blood work done. I'm 14 weeks along. It seems weird to me, but my OB hasn't recommended any tests yet. I've left a urine sample twice and that's it. Am I the only one?

  • They took 4 at my 12 week appointment on monday. Dr said they were finding my blood type and testing for stds, diseases, iron levels, etc.
I'm usually ok with blood draws but I couldn't look and 20 min later I was super light headed. I'm glad my mom was with me to get me some food.

I've never heard of that. you need a prenatal screening to make sure you and baby are healthy (no STDs, HIV, blood levels are OK). its odd that the Dr wouldn't wna check that asap. maybe they forgot?? I'd check w them on monday .
  • They took 7 with me, I had to ask the nurse if there would be enough left!
  • Yup they like to suck our blood :-). I had 9 at one appt. Mayne tests need blood in a specific tube. You will notice they have different color tops each different color has a different additive that effects/ protects specific aspects of the blood so that is part of what they take so much. That and titers for diseases take a lot of serum.
Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

  • I don't understand why they need so much from us but they just take a blot of blood from the newborn and they can test for thousands of diseases (usually its only a few but my hospital does thousands)

This and there is often gel in the tube to separate serum and red cells. So there is usually only a couple ml of blood in each tube. It looks like more than it is people! Relax.

I'm pretty sure this is just my office. Each office is different. I should clarify that they stopped after the testing phase was over so after about 5 months on they didn't draw anymore from me. Sorry to spook you, I should have been more clear to begin with.

  • I was wondering what that gel was!
  • I don't think they will take much but I will have to have blood drawn at like every single appointment and I bruise terribly every time I have blood drawn :(

  • I'm a phlebotomist at my local hospital. Trust me 4-5 viles of blood is not a lot. It takes 95 viles to make a pint.....so don't act like the Dr is taking vital amounts of blood. If it were dangerous they wouldn't do it!
  • I use to donate blood before i got pregnant, so the 12 vials they took at 8 weeks were ok. Although, before I started donating I always thought any more then 3 was a lot.
