If your DC wakes up at night do you let him CIO?

People keep pushing this on us.  Like you HAVE to do this or they will get used to you coming in the room etc.  DS is 5 months has not had to eat during the night for over 2 months (he sttn the night in otherwords).  Anyways, he DOES toss and turn, wimper anywhere from once to four times a night.  We usually go in,. put the paci in his mouth and he falls back asleep the majority of the time.  People are telling us NOT to do this, to let him work it out on his own, even if it means he has to cry for a bit.  Anyone do this?  I know this board is like anti-CIO--but does this even fall under that category??  Advice?

  • I try to comfort her without picking her up, but no I don't just let her CIO. Even if she doesn't need anything I still want her to know I'm there. And no I don't think I'm spoiling her because of it. She mostly STTN, it's a rare occasion that she gets up anymore.

  • If al you have to do is put the paci back in his mouth, I don' see what the big deal is! ?I think that would be better than listening to your little guy scream.

?I mean sooner or later he will learn how to put it back into his mouth on his own. ?Please don't listen to those idiots.

  • Well, the selfish part of me gets frustrated because of course we wake up when he does this and it results in very broken sleep....I'm just confused because literally everyone I know has said that he is old enough and needs to learn to put himself back to sleep without you coming in and giving hin the paci ervy single time and that we are creating bad sleep habits.  I agree that I want him to be able to put himself back to sleep, but wish i knew of an alternate method.

  • At 5 months, i do let my DS fuss himself back to sleep at night. If he cries I go right in. If he fusses for 15-20 minutes without falling back to sleep I go in and make sure everything is ok. In this case I usually just turn on his crib soother with the remote and that puts him back to sleep. But usually DS fusses for less than 5 minutes and puts himself back to sleep.

I also took the paci away at night. My DS was terrible at keeping it in his mouth, like maybe 15 minutes tops and he would cry for me to put it back in. Could.not.deal. He isnt that into the paci anyway, so that wasnt too difficult.

  • I never let DD CIO.  It would break my heart to sit in another room and listen to that when she clearly needs me.  Fussing is very different from crying.  i will let her fuss for a few minutes, but if it turns into a cry, I am right there in a snap.
