Trying to Get Pregnant

Recommend your mascara (or light reading)

1) My mascara always runs. Always. It doesn't matter how long I let it dry, if I only put it on the top lashes, if I use setting spray, or the 24 hour no smudge waterproof, I always end up with smudges under my eyes in an hour or so. Does anyone else have this problem or did someone have it and find an answer?

My lashes are long but not thick and I like mascara because it makes me look a little more pulled together. I do have deep-ish set eyes and slightly oily lids, which I feel might be contributing to this. I don't need fake lashes in a bottle (not that I'm against it, but I'm looking more for daily wear) and I'm willing to spend a little money on this. Also, I'd prefer something that came in a black-brown or soft black and wasn't just in a really dark black because with my hair dyed red a softer color looks better on me.

2) I'm going to get a couple of books this weekend to read after my surgery. So I'd like something light-ish and easy to read. The latest things I read were The One and Only (didn't love it) and All Fall Down. I also enjoy historical fiction and memoirs. Preferably something in paperback, I'm between e-readers and I don't really want to shell for the hardcover unless it's amazing.

Re: Recommend your mascara (or light reading)

  • I use Bad girl lash by benefit. I'm pretty sure I found it at both Ulta and Sephora. I have long lashes too and I think it's great for daily wear (i.e. doesn't make you look like snuffleupagus lol). I've been using this brand for over a year and I've never noticed it run at all.

  • I use L'Oreal Double Extend and its amazing!!  It is a red tube with a white end on one side.  It is tube mascara and works amazingly.

As for books I am a big James Patterson fan.  Love the Womens Murder Club series.  1st to die, 2nd chance, 3rd degree…etc.  I am currently reading The Fixed Trilogy (Fixed on You, Found in You, Forever With You).  Its a cleaner 50 Shades series

    Good Luck with your surgery.

  • @bibliothecary You hit up a lot of my shelves there, I read a ton a Jane Green when she first started out, I own the first 6 or so of her books. I love Jennifer Weiner, in fact I may end up buying some of her I haven't read, I have the first 2 or hers and she kind of slipped off my map until the last one. Any recs of your favorites of theirs?

I love Phillipa Gregory, my plan once she's done with Wars of the Roses is to read them in chronological order year-wise, from the Cousins' War through the Elizabeth ones. I'm a bit weird. I like Alison Weir, but I think I've only read one of hers.

My problem is that a lot of what I'm really wanting to read is coming out this fall, so I have it on pre-order, but I want things to read now.

  • Anything by L'Oreal is usually pretty good. I use L'Oreal Telescopic mascara and love it. It's like $8 and I've never had a problem with it smudging. I also have Pur Minerals Big Look Waterproof mascara and it works just as well as the L'Oreal but it's waterproof. It's actually a little hard to get off.

  • @PenguinMG The One and Only wasn't horribly bad, but it just wasn't as good as her other books. It felt, I guess contrived is the best word I can think of, and I felt like pretty much every character except the main one wasn't fleshed out very well. I normally feel like Giffin writes friendships, especially female friendships well, and this one was not. You could kind of see where it was going right off the bat.

  • I can only help with the mascara. I LOVE this one, and it's a hard bristle instead of a brush so it combs through and spreads the goop evenly.

  • I have been meaning to read The Kite Runner. Unfortunately my advisor and I keep agreeing to course overload me so I've been reading hella textbooks instead. Also, not historical fiction, and I'm not sure the availability outside of an eReader, but interesting none the less is the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is totally not my traditional style but I love it. I also recently read the companion to Gone With the Wind, Rhett Butler's People, and LOVED it. No help on mascara, I basically have to buy a new tube every time I get around to wearing it.

  • I like origins ginzing mascara.

As for light reading, I always reach for good satires. Some authors to check out are Tom Robbins, Christopher Moore, and Neil Gaiman. Or if you haven't read Bossy Pants, you are seriously missing out!

I have indeed and really liked it. I also just pre-ordered Amy Poehler's book that comes out this fall.

As for books, I recently read The Orphan Train which was pretty good.

  • I use Aveda mosscara (yes, it's spelled that way) in brown, and never had a problem with smudging.

If you like historical fiction, The Historian (can't remember the author) is a great fiction piece tracing the origins of Dracula. Or Devil in the White City about the Chicago World's Fair and s serial killer operating at the same time. Or anything by Tracy Chevalier, especially The Virgin Blue.

None of these were what is considered "light" reading, but they are all page-turner that I re-read frequently and can never put down.

  • 1.  I've got long eyelashes with blonde tips, so I'm usually just looking for some volume, but I haven't had an issue with running.  I like the Maybelline Colossal and the Cover Girl Lash Blast for both.  Bonus - they're cheap and come in "soft black" and brown.

    2.  As for books, I second the Neil Gaiman rec.  But I don't know if I would say it's light.  A lot of them are real thinkers.  I feel like Stardust might be the lightest.  (That has a real "Princess Bride" vibe to me.)  I love Jane Green, so I'd also recommend for light and fluffy Sophia Kinsella/Madelaine Wickham.

  • I use Earthlab mascara (https://www.earthlab.ca/products/natural_mascara.html).  It stays on well (I also have oily eyelids) and is clump free. Plus it has no weird chemical smell!

I agree!! I haven't tried the Lengthening yet, but love my Lash Love. I use black, but they have brown also.
Haven't had much time for reading lately, so I'm not much help with that.

  • Benefit They're Real is my favorite mascara right now, it is pretty much loved by all!  Or, I second Better Than Sex from Too Faced, it's great too.

As for light reading - I always re-read Mark Twain or read true crime novels about serial killers when I need some light reading.

  • 1. I love the Bare Minerals definition mascara. It's the one in the black tube, not the silver tube. It lifts really well.

    2. For books, I can't really think of any at the top of my head. I'm really interested in the ones that have already been recommended though.

  • I love everything M•A•C! ♡♡♡♡♡
I personally wear the haute & naughty but that helps with length! However, they have MANY, MANY different options! If you go to any store one of the makeup artists would be able to have a consult with you to find which mascara would best fit your needs!!
Also- maybe try putting a little primer on your eye lids (either before shadow or wear even if you're not wearing shadow) I use M•A•C prep & prime eye!!
    Best of luck!!
  • I like Bad Gal by Benefit and double extend by L'Oreal.

I'm not good with light reading, but I recently read Orange is the New Black and it was pretty interesting. I also liked Under Different Stars by Amy Bartol. It's silly, but an easy, enjoyable read.
