I've been using avon skin so soft instead of bug spray. There are also little things you can clip to your shoe that send a frequency out that repels Mosquitos.

You bet your ass im using sunscreen. Hormones make you more sensitive to the sun and more likely to burn. I use the baby kind they recommend for infants. (My normal kind as i have a pretty little redhead that burns fast)

  • I would talk to your OB again and mention your outdoorsy lifestyle. From what I have read the risk of mosquito bites (and potentially west Nile) is scarier than using a bit of bug spray.

  • Hi, in reply to your questions, yes, yes and yes!
Sun screen is especially important when you're pregnant, I use SPF50 everyday. Check the label to make sure there's nothing harmful in there - like another mama suggested, baby sunscreen is a good idea.
I'm a mosquito magnet and get very bad allergies and am not going to take the risk of catching sth. I found a bug spray thats suitable for all the family- babies and pregnant mothers included. Ask your pharmacist.
And for fake tanning, there are certain products that are perfectly safe to use. I would not recommend spray tan cos of the chemicals, but i use Vita Liberata myself at home, its organic and safe to use. I know some other brands are too, just check the label.
We may be pregnant but it's important to feel good about ourselves too :) good luck!
  • I would just avoid bug sprays that have Deet as an ingredient.  There are several natural bug sprays that you can use.  Also, maybe try burning a citronella candle nearby to keep them away.

As far as sunscreen, I cannot imagine a doctor telling someone not to use it.  Check out the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website. They have an awesome database of tons of skin products for the whole family and rank them based on ingredient safety.  You will find many safer sunscreens than what you typically find at your local drugstore.  You may have to search a little harder or order online but they are out there.  It looks like the website also has info on sunless tanners as well.

  • Oh my gosh, I would seriously side-eye a doctor that suggested against using sunscreen!! Yikes! I stopped using the spray-on kind (probably should have done this awhile ago anyway) because it's so easy to breathe it all in. But I slather than stuff on, SPF50 here.

I haven't needed bug spray yet but plan to buy some without DEET if/when I do.

Avon makes a bug spray as well as the Skin So Soft that has Picardin in it. That is actually on my list of "Things that are okay in Pregnancy" from my Dr. They do mention to stay away from DEET so I agree with PP. As for sunscreen there are a lot of options you can find that do not have harsh chemicals. They may be a little harder to rub in but having to rub in the sunscreen a little harder verses getting burnt to a crisp seems like a better option to me! =)  Good Luck.

  • I was bite a few weeks ago & was in my first tri with twins. It got as huge as my hand, was red and warm to the touch. Had to go into urgent care and was perscribed a grade a antibiotic and was told to use the topical Benadryl. Not fun & scary when prego. Try that skin so soft. I remember using it when I was little. Guess I need to buy more.
  • @Amymfred‌ Look for bug spray that is made from essential oils instead of deet! I love the Badger brand, but there are lots of others. As far as sunscreen goes, just make sure it's zinc oxide-based (and I always opt for natural brands, again Badget has a great one). No need to get sunburned and damage your skin! Or get eaten alive by bugs. Just be aware of chemicals and you'll be fine :)
  • My doctor prohibited use of self-tanning lotions or spray tanning.
