Harmony test cost--got the runaround

I tried searching TB (and other sites!!) and need some specific info, if anyone can help! My doctor's office offers the Harmony fetal DNA test (others like it are the MaterniT21 and Panorama) but the website has no cost information. Called the 800 number, was told to call the lab that handles the test from my doc. Called my doc, got the lab name, called the lab. Well the gentleman gave me the sticker price ($795) but when I said I had heard much closer to $200, he said I had to speak to billing. Well billing kept hanging up on me and when I finally got through, the automated system required an invoice # before proceeding. ARGGGG!

Anyone gone through this recently? Do you have a contact number? Or updated figures for an insured person (though assuming the test isn't covered by insurance itself). $795 is too much, $200 I'd consider.

I also am sort of wondering about seeing if my doc will do one of the other tests available, but I'm sure it's a lab relationship thing...

Re: Harmony test cost--got the runaround

  • you can read holachicaaa's response to me in the ticker change thread. Basically - talking to dr. office, ins, and lab - no one will tell her how much it costs OOP - the range being large ~200 - 800
  • Loading the player...
  • I would try to get the code from the lab and then call your insurance company with the code.

Or do you think insurance won't be covering it at all?

  • Gah, that's what I figured @maddscientist! I'll look in that thread. So frigging obnoxious. I KNOW my insurance won't cover it but the rest of this is just nonsense. Bah.

  • Did you call to see of your insurance will cover any of it? If you are AMA your insurance might pick up some of the cost.

Yeah I have Tricare, and am not AMA. They're great for some things, not great for others. They don't cover a lot though I do have the code.

ETA: that was supposed to be a quote of @bhjones1980. Stupid technology.

Did you have a NT scan done? Did the Dr. want you to take the test or were you looking for peace of mind. I wasn't planning on doing the Harmony test, but my MFM wanted me to, because I was AMA. My NT results were good, but he still wanted me to do the test. :/ Mine was sent to a sister company of Labcorps. Supposedly I was covered, but I will have to wait and see if I get a bill.

Insurance doesn't cover the NT scan, so I'm not planning on having it done. Looks like the quad screening blood work might be it for me!

@holachicca haha I'm just tagging you all over the place, just went and read your initial reply! Sounds like the very same bs....

  • My office offers them now as standard. I'm not high risk. We pay up to $25 because they recently switched test types from panorama to progenity. they suspect it will go up in price after a few months. Frustrating they are not being offered more standard. My Dr told me they have 99% accuracy.
  • Do you have tricare prime or standard? Tricare prime does cover an NT scan. We had ours done no problem completely paid for.
  • I got billed $800 from the lab for the harmony results. I had an HMO and it did not get approved. Sorry you're getting the runaround. :(

Standard doesnt mean your insurance will pay for it. It means the dr orders them for everyone. Progenity tests to see if you or dh carry certain genetic disorders. Its not the same as a harmony test. I'm not completely sure how they are different but this is what i was told by the lab.

  • She actually said that I would only pay up to $25 with insurance. She was very clear on that.
  • I had the harmony done after calling insurance company. They pay for 80% of the test (because i am AMA and i have past history). I'm slightly concerned at how much 20% will be as i know they bill insurance carriers way more than the bill people paying out of pocket. My amnio last pregnancy thru labcorp (same lab) was only $500 so here is hoping it is less than that.
