More Calcium?

So I had to go to the hospital for my 20 week a/s (my doc doesn't do it in their office) and the doc at the hospital was mentioning to me about calcium.  He asked if I drank milk every day and if I didn't that I should be taking extra calcium supplements (like 800 mg a day I think he said).

Anyways, this is my third pregnancy and no one has ever mentioned this to me before!  What you are ladies doing?  Taking supplements or trying to eat more calcium rich foods?

  • We had a thread similar to this about 2 days ago.... wow it got buried to page 4 fast.  Hope you find some of the other suggestions in here as helpful.

  • @CandEChicago thanks!  I did a search but nothing came up and I didn't dig 4 pages deep so thanks for passing that along.  I guess I just was interested in what specific supplements people might be taking/liking or if just eating more calcium in your diet is good enough.

(not overly concerned since I did have two healthy kids before this eating the same as I do now but whatevs I can do to make a baby healthier I'm up for!)

  • I was under the impression that calcium was important, more so for the mother's health instead of the baby's.  The baby will take what it needs even if it needs to be taken from your bones.  Be careful with calcium supplements, the best option is to adjust your diet.  This is a big issue for me because I have a problem with kidney stones so I need to avoid supplements, but at the same time make sure I get enough calcium but not too much.

  • I'm taking a supplement this time. My previous pregnancies I was fine getting calcium through diet, but I'm lactose intolerant now (thanks to being dairy free for 18 months for bfing), so it's hard to get enough calcium from foods. Plus my vitamin D was a little low and my OB said D supplements are best absorbed with calcium. Anyway, I take the vitafusion gummies and they're great.
