Reusing already heated milk

edited August 2014 in Breastfeeding
I have given LO's babysitters's permission to save an already heated bottle if LO didn't finish it and refrigerate and use it for the next feeding. It's usually used within 2-3 hours and I Haven't had any issues so far. Today when picking up LO from daycare, they had just warmed a bottle that she started, probably had half an ounce, and didn't finish. When she saw me, of course she wanted to nurse at home and not finish the bottle. So I put bottle in the fridge. Well now instead of rewarming and using in 2-3 hours, it theoretically would be used tomorrow in about 12 hours (the next day at daycare). Is this okay? Does it make a difference that the breastmilk was pumped 3 days ago and not just yesterday? Should I err on the side of caution and dump it? I hate doing that, it's a whole 4 oz :(. Thoughts?

  • Thanks, I guess I could just give it the sniff test in the morning.

  • Yeah I'd just smell it and go by that.

  • Officially you shouldn't use it past a few hours. Personally I wouldn't. Especially if it's just like half an ounce.

  • It would depend on the amount and I'd smell it before use. Oftentimes when that happened to us, I'd try to incorporate it into dinner for LO, like mix it into baby cereal or something. I'm not sure how old your LO is, if they are on solids yet. I'd also communicate with daycare about your usual pick up time and ask that they not heat a bottle within a half hour or so of pick up unless baby was very upset and hadn't eaten recently and I'd make that emergency bottle smaller, like a couple ounces, with its intention being to hold baby over till you arrive.
