Would you be concerned if you were me?

My LO is 7 months old. He does not roll over (he has twice but stopped), he does not sit up on his own, does not feed himself, does not crawl, and has no teeth yet... He also doesn't babble and cannot push up on his arms while on his tummy.
I told my ped. at his 6 month check up 3 weeks ago and says he won't be concerned until his 12 month check up.
WDYT?

ETA - by feed himself, I mean he cannot hold his own bottle

  • About some things I might. Like the rolling over, pushing up while on tummy, & babbling are probably the things I would wonder about most. The other things I don't think are a big deal at all at 7 months, but I would probably expect sitting by around 9 months (I think it's a 6-9 month milestone?) & crawling by 10 months or so (if he crawls at all) so I definitely would revisit those with the pedi before a year.

Some babies just don't get teeth til later. My LO was over 7 months when she got her first one. Also my LO doesn't hold her bottle either. Like at all, lol.

  • I'd try not to worry if your pedi wasn't. Especially with sitting up and crawling, and teeth. I have many friends whose babies didn't get teeth til a year or later.

  • I will say that some of these things are 6 to 9 month milestones. Do you have a 9 month check up with your pedi? If so and things are the same you can push the issue further and if you're not happy with the information and answers that your pedi gives you. Or if you feel like they don't take your concerns seriously you coukd always look for a new doctor.
But I will say sometimes these things just happen like and explosion and by 9 months your LO may be doing all of these things and more.

  • Yes I would worry and push the doctor to worry a bit as well. I wish I could say no, bc I hate when people worry but some of those things were 6mo milestones for my doc and she's pretty laidback.
  • I wouldn't worry just yet, but I would probably get a second opinion from a different pedi. If it turns out that there is something behind the delays, better to know now than at 12 months. As @SailorTink‌ said, follow your gut.
  • I agree with PPs. If it was just crawling I would say don't worry but babbling and pushing up on tummy? I would be concerned. I would see a different pedi and get a second opinion.

  • Follow your gut, a mother's intuition is usually spot on.

  • I would get another opinion if it was me just because some of those are milestones LO should hit before 1. Others I dont find as concerning like the teeth thing.
  • You should talk to LOs pediatrician. LO sounds a lot like my LO. Mine won't roll anymore, has no teeth, is nowhere near crawling, and doesn't hold her sippy cup well. I think if I were you I'd be concerned with the fact that your LO isn't babbling. Does he get a lot of floor/tummy time?

  • I would either seek a 2nd opinion or wait and see how he's doing at 9 months.  Like others have said, no crawling and no teeth are nothing to be concerned about.  Ben just started rolling back to belly a few weeks ago (had been going the other direction for a while) and really pushing up with arms straight since about then too.  If they aren't spending much time on their belly then they aren't really going to get much practice pushing up. I honestly think that your baby is probably just fine, just doing things a little late, but it's good to keep an eye on things.  Also, the babbling starts almost over night it seems.  DS2 was SO QUIET until one day around 7 months he just started yapping and never stopped.  So I'd give him at least another month before getting too worked up.

  • Also was your LO born early by any chance? And I second what was said about how much time is spent on the tummy. Most (if not all) of these things are only learned with practice. So, if LO isn't given time to practice then it will take longer.

    This. Get a second opinion.

  • Yes, I agree with PPs. Especially about the pushing up and rolling. Maybe it's nothing! LO may start to do everything all at once, but I'd get a second opinion.

  • DD#1 was late almost exactly like your LO, we ended up needing pt at 11 months. Within weeks of starting pt, she was rolling like a pro, army crawling and pulling herself up and about 2 months later she walked. I firmly believe that pt helped her and that it was truly beneficial at an earlier age. So I guess what I am saying is get a second opinion or keep pushing your Dr, if help is needed the earlier the better.

  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate it. Sorry for the delayed response - we went away this weekend.
He finally rolled once but hasn't done it since and he started this excited scream / yell. He also started laughing and going ha-ha-ha or mm-mmm-mmm but no two syllable babbling.

I called my doctors this morning and they won't see him until 12 months unless he is sick with the cold/flu. This might be how things work in Canada? Short of finding a whole new doctor (which is very difficult in my province), I don't know how to get him seen by a specialist.

  • Does your area have Early Intervention? It may be just a local or U.S. thing, but we have a team of specialists for our county who will evaluate kids and work with them for free (PT, OT, speech). We have been using it for Finn's torticollis. Maybe see whether your area has something like that?

I think the babbling you mentioned above sounds fine. My baby is chatty, but I don't remember actual two-syllable babbles. It's mostly how you described.

Sounds like if baby is laughing and starting some sounds that's a good start. Here's a good video I found: https://youtu.be/5bNNVwDOM4s Here's one to show typical and Atypical development: https://youtu.be/sUO6baJ0FcA
THANK YOU! And thanks to everyone else - very helpful.

I'm definitely concerned, especially with his upper boy strength and lack of ability to roll when he should.
