The room sharing thread got me thinking about SIDS. I don't know anybody this has happened to or a friend of a friend. I feel like it's urban legend when I most certainly know it is not. Obviously it does happen and I can't imagine the heartache a new parent must go through. Do you know anyone this has happened to?

Happened to a girl on the fb group I'm on. I don't know the details really. Apparently mom left him in something other than a bed (I think a bouncy chair) and came back to find him blue. He didn't make it sadly. Needless to say I got the angel care just after seeing that.

But like you said. If it's going to happen it will. The older they get the less of a risk. We can do everything to prevent it but we can't stop it

And that in itself is scary.

I don't know anyone. I am terrified of SIDS. LO slept 7 hours and my husband woke me up at 5 am wanting me to check on him (he sleeps right next to me in a RNP). I also frequently wake up to check if he is breathing.

I don't know anyone that this has happened to. I hope I never know anyone who has to go through that.

I dont know anyone but have heard of it. Im terrified of it. I check on her very frequently when she is sleeping to see if she is breathing. This may be a very stupid question but I have been wondering... does it happen from having things in the crib that they suffocate on or are they sleeping and just stop breathing all of a sudden? Does anyone know?

My Mom had a brother pass this way in the 60's and my sisters friend lost her baby at 2 months old. It is so devastating and scary the lack of knowledge on it for better prevention. So so sad. I guess the feeling of lack of control gets to me as well. I often check in tge night if my babes are still breathing.

Two kids in one family!? That is just awful. Shouldnt happen to anyone. But twice is just really sad.

I too wake up in the night to ensure my DD sleeping in her RnP next to me is breathing. It is the unknown exactly that makes it so scary.

DH's good friend lost her nephew to SIDS. She was pregnant with her second at the time (the aunt) and we were expecting our first. It broke my heart to imagine the mother's pain. She organized a yearly benefit in memory of her nephew to raise money for SIDS research and to help local families who have lost little ones. It's really amazing how they've created something positive to preserve his memory.

My understanding is that he passed at daycare. I can't even imagine how devastating that must have been to not be able to do anything

A friend's friend lost her little girl to SIDS. I believe she was sleeping on her belly but don't know how much that played into it. Definitely scary!

I don't know anyone personally.

It's not a huge fear for me. I think it's always in the back of my mind and I do take precautions, but I spend more of my time actively worrying about the more preventable problems. Choking, burns, drowning, etc.

My cousin's seven month old son died from SIDS right after my daughter turned one month old. Both of their older children were taken away from them because in her state the police are required to investigate. Luckily they are staying with family. From what I understand, seven months is pretty old for this to happen and they had thought he was no longer at risk.

The worry was always in the back of mind, but it changes your perspective when it hits so close to home.

My BIL's sister lost one of her twins due to suffocation on bedding, while in an adult bed unattended. It was not classified as SIDs though. She was 6 months old. I have also heard of an incident at a daycare which is in the same corporate chain as the school I work for.

I recently read an [older] article from NPR about how in a majority of SIDS cases it was found that the baby was in an unsafe sleep environment - bumpers, blankets, pillows, co-sleeping, etc. I'll try and find the article again and post a clicky here.

I unfortunately have 2 friends who have lost their baby girls to SIDS. One was 6 or 7 years ago at 5 months old, before I met her. The other is a pretty good friend who lost her sweet baby girl last September, a few days shy of 10 months old. Her daughter was 2.5 months younger than DD1, it hit so close to home. I have always been paranoid about SIDS, but this brought it to a whole new level. I was also about 6 weeks pregnant with DD2 when it happened, so my hormones were a mess anyway. It's just completely heartbreaking. I still use an Angelcare monitor with DD1, which I know is overkill, but it makes me feel better.

I'm terrified of if! My daughter is a stomach sleeper.
I have tried from day one to get her on her back and she cries so hard she turns purple in the face and starts spitting up. She hates being on her back. Hates her car seat, hates her swing.

These stories all sadden me. I wake and also check my LO for breathing throughout the night. The stores I'm reading of it happening at daycare horrify me. I just think if LO is at daycare surely they're paying attention. But I know it can't alway be prevented.

@Bacon2‌ I've read that keeping a fan pointed at the baby at night can help reduce the CO2 rebreathing risk.

We have good friends who had a baby die of SIDS he was just under 3 months old. He would have been 7. My heart breaks for them again each time his birthday passes.

They're 4th (3rd living) just turned 3 months.

Yes, I do. Someone from DD1's BMB, and her angel went to heaven the same day mine was born. It's always something in the back of my mind.

I can think of 4 that I know off the top of my head. One of them as recent as May of this year, right after this LO was born. He was 2 months old. Absolutely heartbreaking. I cant imagine.
