To feed or not to feed...?

I am guessing my 18 week old is going through her "4 month sleep regression". She was STTN (8-12 hours), now she gets up once . She always gets up a different time too. I've been feeding her (I FF) & she will go back to sleep within about 30min.

Am I creating a bad habit of feeding her in the night? Been reading about it & some say since LO was sleeping through the night that they obviously can... But some say they are growing a lot here & are asking for food for a reason...?

Re: To feed or not to feed...?

  • If she seems genuinely hungry then feed her. You can always try soothing before food and see if she settles, if she doesn't or wakes again shortly after, then she was probably hungry.

  • During the night we try to soothe first and see what happens. If he's hungry, he'll let us know!

  • I also will try to put his pacie back in then I leave the room. If he wakes up again within about 10 mins, I will feed him. DS has also been sleeping 8-12 hours with an occassional wake up.

  • That's a good question I wonder about myself.  DS has been able to go through the night without eating until 6:00 a.m. and can be put back to sleep with his pacifier.  This morning though, he was wide awake at 4:00 a.m. Although he wasn't crying, I fed him anyhow and he sucked it down.  I thought that would help him sleep longer than 6:00 but nope, he was awake again at 6:15 waiting for his morning feeding!

  • We do paci first, then feed if that doesn't work.  I offer him the breast, which soothes him too.  He hasn't been eating much in his MOTN wake-ups, just a few good gulps, a little bit of soothing, then he's back to sleep.
