C-Section #2

With my first pregnancy almost five years ago, I had preeclampsia and it became a medical necessity to have a C-section. It was tough because I can't take pain killers (they make me throw up.... trust me I've tried them all, even liquids) so I was on my own after the epidural wore off. I'm really scared to go through that again now that I have a 4 year old to chase around. I would really rather have a vaginal birth this time around, but my doctor is insisting on a second C-section. Anyone have any advice?

  • This pregnancy had been easy going. No problems at all and my baby boy is growing beautifully. Medically, there is not a need for a C-Section, other than that fact that I had one with the first pregnancy. My doc says that it's standard practice. They have already scheduled it! October 7th. I'm terrified.
  • You should definitely eat something before trying to take pain meds, that will help to prevent or at least decrease nausea. In this area, at least, it is common for docs to prescribe 800 mg ibuprofen upon discharge, so that may be an option for you.

  • I second the Zofran.

A lot of people get sick from pain killers. Tell them that you get "motion sickness" (even if you don't) and they may give you an anti-emetic as a preventative.

  • If you can't take pain killers at all I am not sure how much less painful a VBAC would be? You might have to get stitched etc so you would still be in pain. I guess it's where can you handle the pain best? Just something to think about...

  • If you want to have a vaginal birth, and you aren't having any complications, there really isn't any reason not to go for it.  Maybe check out vbacfacts.com??  Even ACOG says that having had one cesarean is not a valid reason for a second.  You might have to search out a different provider...  you'll just have to decide which option is right for you.

As for the pain meds, I agree on the anti-nausea stuff.  Maybe you could also have someone help around the house and with your older child so that you have more time to rest and heal postpartum??
  • Thanks to everyone for your advice. I have decided to look for a new doctor who supports my birth plan. It's scary to think about switching at 31 weeks, but I feel less stressed now that I've made the decision. It really helped having input from someone other than my hubby, who just said "whatever you think is best."
