  I am thinking along the lines of puzzles, stamps, art supplies, pattern blocks for our dd's 3rd bday. An experience gift is always nice, too. Tickets to the zoo or aquarium.

  My dd will be 3 on Wednesday. She is playing with her kitchen stuff and play food right this moment. She loves to push toys around in a doll stroller also. So much depends on the individual child as you know. Happy shopping!

  Usually I've been picking arts and craft supplies since those are things that run out and you can always use extras.
  
  Also we got my dd1 a princess paper doll thing and she loves it.

  I got a friends daughter the Melissa & Doug wooden doll dress up set. The clothes are magnetic. Supposedly, she really likes that. Otherwise, I might go with books from a local bookstore along with a gift receipt just in case.

  Another vote for puzzles. DS is almost 3 and is really into them lately. Books are always a great choice too.

  Puzzles books dolls and arts & craft sets, ie markers, crayons, paint sets, play doh, modeling clay etc

  My DD is 3.5 and for her birthday she got a ton of arts and crafts type things, books, building blocks. She (and I) loved anything that helps her use her imagination. Also as a PP mentioned gifts to an experience like the zoo or museum are great too.
