Super gassy baby

Is there anything out there to help prevent gas in a breastfed baby? My poor guy is always so gassy and I think it causes him to have really restless sleep. I use gas drops once he has gas but wondering if there is any way to prevent or lessen it? Do baby probiotics exist?

Re: Super gassy baby

  • You could try cutting out dairy, soy, caffeine, or wheat to see if that helps. Also, burping and gas drops at every feeding.

  • My ped told me that if it makes me gassy, it will make Baby Girl gassy. So to avoid gassy foods in my diet
  • Yes baby probiotics exist, I have never used them personally. Try a natural food store. Also try different forms of de-gassing baby, such as the milk shake. Or there's what I call the hula. You place baby's back to your chest then slowly move there hips in a circle or just side to side. The point if the exercise is to change the shape of the belly to help trapped air escape. DH used to squeeze DD1s knees to her chest and she'd always let it rip, but I never had luck with that.
  • I agree with playing around with your diet to see if that helps... stop eating diary for a week and see if that makes a difference, if not try removing something else, and so on until you've either identified the problem or eliminated all the options.
DS struggles with gas a lot more than DD and I find having him nap in the swing seems to really help... it's something about that reclined position that seems to help work it out. Same goes with the car seat.
And consistently burping them, but that's obvious. I find that I can take DS off a few times per feeding and get a big burp each time.

  • My pediatrician actually said it's not likely that what you're eating is causing the baby issues unless you're seeing something wrong with their stools (blood, mucus, etc). We do probiotics but DD, who is EBF, is still very gassy. Other than the bicycle legs, tummy massages, warm baths, feeding as upright as possible, burping a lot, etc. there's not much you can do. I don't think it would hurt to play around with your diet, but our doc (and some articles I've read on kellymom, etc) seem to think it shouldn't have much effect on gas alone.
  • Might be an off the wall  suggestion but he could have thrush.  My dd2 was super gassy and I thought that was just her you know, but we have thrush and I guess that is a big side effect.   Now that we are being treated, her gassiness has definelty decreased and this makes for a happier mommy and baby!

  • The fenugreek I was taking made for a super gassy baby. Once I cut that out she is better. Downside is I can't seem to pump as much.
  • You can try Gerber Soothe Drops for a probiotic.

  • Thanks for the tips. I have been trying to avoid dairy and haven't had caffeine since he was born. Wouldn't I have some other symptoms if it was thrush?

Hope it works itself out- we dealt with a super gassy baby early on and it was so terrible. I've found that putting her across my knees and jiggling/patting her back sometimes would help the gas get out. Also, putting her super high on my shoulder so her belly rested at the top was pretty effective. Good luck!

  • The symptoms we had I attributed to other things.  My nipple were sore but what breastfeeding moms aren't in the first few weeks?  She was gassy but I didn't even know that was a symptom.  She would have diaper rash here and there but it usually cleared up within a day.    I did notice white in her mouth but only after feedings so I just assumed milk.     After the Dr said thrush I felt like an idiot because clearly there were signs but when I looked at each of these they were independant of the next symptom ya know?
