has anyone gone right from a crib to a twin bed?

I'm hoping to transition DD1 (almost 18 mos) from her crib to a twin bed sometime in the next few months. I can't figure out the logistics. Should we start with just naps? Start with just the mattress on the floor? Completely swap her crib with the mattress, or bring in the mattress but with her crib still in there in case it doesn't work? The head and one long side will be against walls and there will be a guard thing on the other long side and the foot will be open.. at least that's what I'm envisioning.

Right now the mattress and box spring are sitting in a spare room. She can climb up and down by herself and likes to flop down on the pillow. I just refinished a piece of furniture that will be a part of her big girl ensemble and I got the itch to really get these room makeovers underway. She's a good sleeper but she changes positions a ton in the night. We have time but once I get excited about something I want to do it right away!

  • I just completely swapped. We talked about it. Went shopping for bedding. Made it exciting. And then one day we just switched and he switched rooms at the same time. We put it right on the bedframe with guards and he was fine. He wasn't a good napper before the switch so he just kind of stopped napping with the switch.

  • My girls were very briefly in a toddler bed because our crib converted to one and they both needed to move suddenly with no notice (climbing). They both moved to a twin pretty soon after. We never transitioned with either. One day we took the rail of the crib and put them to bed and that was that.

Drew moved to a twin bed when we moved in June and it was a non issue. We passed his crib down to my sister, who just had her first baby. He slept better in it than he ever slept in the crib.

We never used  guard rails and none of my kids fell out of bed more than 2 or 3 times ever.

And all three moved before 18 months.

They are at such a fun age! All of a sudden DSs vocabulary is exploding and it's amazing! Last night he climbed up to the counter to try to play on my computer and when I asked him what he was doing he smiled at me and said "it's fine." Umm, what???? No it's not dude and lol at the word choice!

Seriously, don't overthink it (though it's hard not to). None of my three even had so much as a blip on the radar when we moved to a bed. If anything their sleep improved.

And actually, since Drew still will only go to sleep with us (although he no longer wants to be held) a twin bed is great because I can lie down with him, wait for him to go to sleep and not have to move him to get him into the crib!

  • Reese went to a crib to a mattress on the floor to a bed. However, the mattress on the floor was due to the fact that we didn't have a bed ready for her. She was almost 3. She was fine :)

  • DD was older, 2yr9mon, but we just moved her right into a twin.  We did not start with the mattress on the floor, but she has a guard on the side of her bed.  We tried to get her excited, let her pick out her own sheets and we also let her go to Build A Bear and make a bear for her new bed/room.  One day she decided she wanted to nap in her bed and we just went from there, that was her bed.  She did sometimes ask to go back to her crib, but we held firm and she did fine.
  • Not to thread hijack here but what age should you transition?
  • We did it when we moved, I think he was about 20 months or so. I wanted to get all the transitions out of the way at once. He did fine. He was a little scared the first night, but that was probably due to the new place rather than the bed. I stayed with him until he fell asleep and the next day, we had zero issues. We had a frame, but it's really low to the ground (IKEA) and he could easily climb in and out on his own. We did use a bed rail until just a couple weeks ago.

  • We moved DD from crib to full size bed at 2yr2months. We didn't use rails or anything. She did fall out twice in the first 2wks but otherwise the transition was easy. She never climbed out of her crib so maybe she doesn't know she can get out of her bed. She waits for us to come get her.

You will get a huge range of answers. We did very early for different reasons each time.

Julia: at 16 months we were away for 10 nights in various places and she slept in a sleeping bag on the floor for all of it. When we got back she flat out refused her crib even though before leaving she was happy in it. It took three nights of her insisting on sleeping with us (which she had never done or wanted to do until that point and has not done since; we don't do kids in our bed) and screaming bloody murder near her crib to realize that she wanted a bed instead. We took the crib side off that day and she went back to gladly climbing into bed, going right to sleep and sleeping 12 hours overnight and 2-3 hour nap.

Emma: at 17 months she got a bloody nose trying to climb out. We decided it was safer to move her before she got badly hurt because if she wanted out she was getting out. From that night until about six months ago she climbed right into her sister's bed and they slept together. Apparently she wanted to sleep with her sister instead of trapped in a crib.

Drew: we moved at 16 months and my sister had a newborn, so we passed the crib down and moved him to a twin bed moving day. He did great and for the first time in his life is napping in his crib and STTN.

I'm seriously convinced my younger two were a little claustrophobic in the crib because both were shit sleepers until they moved to a twin bed and then slept great!

I would leave them in the crib as long as possible!  As long as they aren't jumping out or over the weight limit, I wouldn't mess with it personally.  DD loved her crib, but we had to move her because DS was 6 months old and outgrowing the bassinette.
  • Yep, straight from the crib to a twin bed
