SS: Mirena

I have always used condoms. I didn't plan to change that but my doctor seemed really convinced I should look into Mirena. I can't take any other BC because I have a clotting disorder. The Dr was adamant that the hormone in it is not associated with clotting.

My deductible is met for the year so the $900 fee would be waived. I'm just nervous that it could come out (I want a 3rd but not this soon after a c/s so really more nervous it would happen too soon), nervous about the cramping, nervous about the periods afterwards, nervous about checking its placement each month. I guess I am nervous about everything! She assured me it would not impact my milk supply so I guess as long as it doesn't make me fat or give me a blood clot, I should be good.

If you have a horror story or a good story, please share it with me. My BFF had it and hated it (it dislodged the first time, second time she got pregnant, LOL.) Dr doesn't like or prescribe Paraguard and my insurance runs out tomorrow so I have to $#!t or get off the pot.

Re: SS: Mirena

  • I was told that with mirena, women often note significantly lighter periods, if not having them stop all together. No direct experience though.

  • Did your Dr say why she doesn't like the Paraguard? Just curious, because I am looking into getting that one.
  • @TakeMeAway55 she said it causes heavy bleeding in some people and that the copper is controversial in terms of the affects of long-term copper in the body.

I am not doing it for lighter periods but that would be nice. She said she doesn't normally place them till 12 weeks but she is placing mine at 7 weeks due to the aforementioned insurance issues.

I have a horror story. got it placed about 6 months pp with DS. it caused me horrible pain all the time. I had periods that lasted 12 days with heavy bleeding and I would only have about 7-10 days of no bleeding before more bleeding started. sex was excruciating and caused me to bleed more afterwards. it always felt like it had moved and was lodged in my ovaries even though it wasn't. I got it removed after five months on September 3. I got pregnant with B on September 19.

my dr said it is 50/50. some women love it and it works great for them. other women absolutely hate it and their bodies hate it. you never know until you get it. but that's my horror story and why I will never have an IUD again.

    eta this was mirena
  • @Lilygrace48 I have mixed emotions about the skipped period thing. I mean, our bodies are meant to get them so I am not sure I feel good about stopping them for no reason. I read an article once that said the designers of BC pills never intended you to have a period while on them but they realized women freaked out not getting one so they added that "feature." Clearly times have changed because now most people look at no periods as a bonus.

  • I've got Paragard. My periods are really no worse. I can't do hormonal BC because I get terrible migraines. Had it before DS and just got it last week. I love it!
  • I had no issue with mirena re: placement, checking, periods.

I did have horrible mood swings and I hated that so I had it removed after a few months.

  • I got one to help with endo, loved it, no issues or periods. Took it out when ttc, got KU after 8 cycles, now have another one.

I don't know if it took longer to get pregnant bc of Mirena or endo, but I had to ttc because of endo getting worse at alarming rate after laproscopy.
  • I had one pre babies, I won't ever get it again. Insertion was difficult, but I've always had issues with cervical stuff, so thats probably me. Checking placement was no big deal and I had no issues with it staying in place or anything.
However....I developed a chronically low mood- never could be really happy about anything. I wasn't depressed, just had no highs or lows ever. Maybe apathetic would be the best word for it? I also had zero sex drive. I mentioned it to my doctor and was told the hormone levels in Mirena were too low to cause any of those issues but I found enough people blogging about it that convinced me that it might be the source of the trouble. We were okay with getting pregnant at that point anyways so I got it out and within a month or so I was back to my usual self. I've talked to other people on here who had the same experience, but also some who had it and loved it.

  • Gah! Cysts? Low moods? No sex drive? I wonder if all that is worth it. I know doctors always claim the dosage is super low but I am one of those with a really sensitive system where I am prone to experiencing stuff. I guess worst case scenario I just have it removed? I have never had a vaginal birth so I anticipate it hurting extra since all my friends who HAVE delivered vaginally have said it sucked. My mom said they're a nightmare to have removed. Ugh.

  • No offense but I'd kind of disregard your moms opinion on this. IUDs have come a LONG way from when she would have had one. As I said, my insertion and any other cervical procedures I've needed have totally sucked. I didn't even feel the removal.

  • @curlylocks3 yeah i take EVERYTHING she says with a grain of salt, LOL!! ;) My doctor agreed with your opinion, too. :)

So, I just got back from having the thing inserted. When I had my c/s several nurses and the anesthesiologist all remarked that I had a high pain tolerance. Well, they must've just been stroking me because I felt like this thing hurt a lot while being inserted. I took a pain pill beforehand so the cramping is manageable. But the insertion sucked. I started to sweat really bad. Ugh.  All this to say, I have always respected women who had vaginal births but as of today, if you had one, you're my HERO! I don't think I am woman enough to have handled a vaginal birth.

  • @MrsCase1‌ did your DR prescribe anything to soften the cervix beforehand? I'm due to have Mirena implanted in one month (@12 weeks) but didn't anticipate pain with insertion.
  • @rel2metse no she did not prescribe anything to soften me up. Not even sure how that would work for home use? (I've never had a vaginal delivery so all I know of cervical softenings is what people shared in their birth stories so forgive any ignorance on the matter.) All my girlfriends IRL who have had one inserted have said it hurts so I expected it to. Dr also said it would hurt. Many doctors only insert them when you're on your period, presumably so you're already dilated a bit? I didn't get my period for a year PP due to nursing so that wouldn't work for me, plus I was having mine inserted particularly early because I'm losing my insurance before my new insurance kicks in at 90 days. So my uterus just had to tolerate it "as is."

  • I had a good experience with Mirena -- no issues with placement, cramps, and my period didn't return until i got it taken out 2 years later.  Immediately after placement the strings bothered DH, so they tucked them in my cervix and I had no more complaints.  Removal wasn't even bad.  My only negative side effect was decreased libido, but I have that on any hormonal birth control.  I'm considering the paraguard this time around, but the heavy periods really make me hesitant.

  • I haven't been on birth control in forever (7, 8 years?), and I don't really want to go back to the pill.  I'm considering Mirena, but some of the anecdotes here worry me a bit.  I have a history of depression (not currently on meds), so the mood stuff does give me pause.  hmmm....

  • Thank you @MrsCase1‌. My OB called in a prescription to soften my cervix and recommended I take a pain med to assist with insertion. I had a c/s and am unsure the name of the cervix softening med I am to take. Once I pick up the meds this weekend I'll share for future reference or to help others on this thread.
  • @Rei2metse‌ it might be Cytotec they are giving you. It was helpful with my insertion.
