If you get an epidural it can make you shake like crazy!! I wasn't cold, but my teeth were chattering. It was odd. I wasn't really expecting that, but afterward lots of my mom friends said it happened to them.

STMs…. Give some advice/stories to our FTMs that for some reason nobody tells you when you are pregnant!! GO!

Re: What nobody has told you… STMs give advice/stories

  • Both times I got the shakes after giving birth while they were stitching me up. Its like I lost control of my body, I would shake uncontrollably. I think it was due to adrenaline.

  • I got one.. Or two.. Take the colace!! Seriously!! And don't do like I did and punch the nurse who was massaging my uterus post delivery.... Seriously.. That hurts...
  • I totally had the shakes from the adrenaline; however, I didn't have an epi or even an IV.

For a few weeks after delivery I almost never peed. It was like my bladder muscles were made of steel -- even though I was peeing every five minutes while pregnant, I think it was toning and conditioning the muscles. It was pretty crazy how much I could hold in at that point.

I was surprised that newborns make a lot of snorting and grunting noises. They hardly ever sleep super quietly. Nobody tells you that.
My mom said something about this. She said when I was born that she thought every time I made a noise at night she had to get up with me and/or feed me. She made sure to tell me to wait until noises have developed into a full blown CRY before I feel an urgency to feed or change our little guy. She said she swore that she was the one that actually woke me up half the time.

No one told me how terrible the initial post partum phase is... like peeing your pants every time you laugh or cough or the hemorrhoids.... that was the worst for me. The squirt bottle and donut are amazing... take them home :) and watch how the nurses make the ice packs... those are glorious too. Make sure you have heavy duty pads and tucks/witch hazel pads at home. I had a very easy labor and delivery experience and totally did not see that misery coming.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
  • What @amyc216 said!  I was surprised at how many places milk comes out of your nipples.  It's more like a little shower head than a faucet.

Don't worry if you don't feel that crazy love everyone talks about right away.  Having a newborn is a huge adjustment, you'll be physically screwed up while healing, sleep-deprived, and filled with postpartum hormones.  I spent a lot of time feeling like I had made a huge mistake and ruined my life forever -- it will get better with time.
  • Something no one really talked about was what in the world do I with this kid when I'm home alone and trying to carry groceries in. At first I literally carried my dd in her carrier in one hand and a sack or two in the other. Let me say it took forever, until I realized it was okay to not be looking at her or with her every second.

Also, no one told me but within a day or two of being home know you'll have to take your little one to the pediatrician. Trust me, you'll notice EVERY sick kid there!

Oh the six week check up really isn't that bad. I remember losing precious sleep over it because I was so scared.

One last thing, when you dry up your milk buy a head of cabbage and keep it in the fridge. Then peel off a leaf when needed and stick it in your bra. It feels absolutely amazing and is the perfect shape.

  • When it is time to push, push like you are pooping. You will already feel like you need to, so embrace the urge when it's time!
  • Baby girls can have some blood colored discharge in their diapers. They are going through some major hormone changes too, it is actually normal, although it seems scary/alarming.

  • Like pp said, I had NO CLUE that there wasn't just one hole in each nipple. I seriously thought I was a freak the first time I saw that! And the spraying in the shower, holy shit!

I never knew that you can't eat anything during labor... I was starving so the first meal I had after I gave birth to DS was glorious!
That being said, if you've been in labor for hours without eating your need to eat to maintain energy for pushing outweighs your doctors preference that you not eat in case of emergency. I was caught off guard with DD's birth and by the time I was ready to push, I hadn't eaten since my early breakfast almost 12 hours earlier. I asked the nurse for something with protein and they obliged.

  • Make sure you bring some protein bars or cheese & crackers to snack on. If you end up having a long labor, you'll need it & the nurses won't give you anything but ice & popcycles.

Also I second the post partum night sweats. I had them for a year after my first & for about a month after my second. Putting a towel on your pillow helps a lot. It helps absorb the sweat.

  • I'll second (third, forth) lots of what's been said..

Bring snacks! I was allowed a fast food burger run when it was clear I wasn't progressing that first night, but that is rare. By the time I ate two mornings later I was so starved that the hospital food tasted like the best food ever.

The nurses will come into your room at all hours... during shift change, to check you vitals, to check push on your uterus, to administer a hearing test, to do birth certificate paperwork, to check how your nursing/pumping is coming along, etc, etc, etc forever.

Do not soap up your nipples in the shower, it will dry them out and hurt.

Speaking of dry, my scalp was VERY dry and itchy for weeks PP. Head & Shoulders did the trick for me.

Yes, babies make a lot of noise in their sleep. You will be up and checking on them constantly, that's ok.

  • You will leak in your sleep. It took a little for me to realize it was best for me to sleep on top of a towel and keep my water proof pad on. I would nurse DD in the middle of the night and not properly line up my breast pad/put my boob away at all. Helped save some sheets I just didn't have the energy to wash.

When you nurse baby on one side, your other boob leaks too!

  • Sore nipples. Damn! I wanted to cry but luckily I had my mother and she recommended good old non scented vaseline/baby jelly. Works wonders and you don't need to wash it off b4 bf'ing

Csection mamas. Get up and walk the next day. It's the best thing u can do for yourself. Try not to punch or swear at the nurse cz it hurts. But it's gotta b done.
  • Get these milk savers for the other boob while you are nursing/ leaking https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001SMBRWO?pc_redir=1406725147&robot_redir=1

Get a compression belt if you have a csection I loved mine. Take the colace.

Even if your hospital is room in don't be afraid to have the nurses take baby for a couple hours. I felt so guilty about it initially but I needed sleep
  • When my little boy was born I felt like every time I opened the diaper to change him he would pee all over. My dad said that when my brother was a baby he did the same thing. He suggested that I open the diaper and blow on his privates just a little and then close the diaper. He said that the slight breeze will make him pee what he has left in his bladder and that sometimes just opening the diaper and closing it for a minute would be enough to do the trick (especially in the winter months). Sure as sh*t, I couldn't believe it worked. I started opening the diaper for a second and then closing it and if he didn't pee I would just blow for about 2 seconds and close the diaper and it would work every time. I rarely got peed on after that!
  • Best piece of advice I took away from my breastfeeding class... TAKE THE PAIN MEDS! Especially if you are a CS mamma which I will be. I know I would be pushing the limits not wanting to pass on pain meds to my baby but was glad to learn all the pain meds given on the post partum floor are safe for breastfeeding. She specifically said you can't have a very sucessful breastfeeding session if you are in pain. That baby is going to be resting on your chest/belly and it will hurt. Take the pain meds!

My best piece of advice is to ask your family to WAIT! Allow yourself to have some kangaroo time (skin to skin). The hospital we deliver at wants skin to skin the first hour after birth and 2 feedings before introducing the babies to family members. I am really looking forward to this time with just the baby and my spouse so we can marvel at the new life we created before the chaos of siblings and grandparents arrive.
