June 2014 Moms

the baby is loose!

We swaddled S from day one, using the Miracle Blanket (it is truly miraculous) - or, Baby Straight Jacket, as I like to call it.  For the most part, she has never been able to break out of it unless one of us numskulls gets lazy and doesn't do it quite right.

Until now.

Baby girl busted out of that sucker twice last night.  Once, she got up for a MOTN deal (so cruel since she'd been letting me sleep until 6 lately) and had her leg sticking out.  And then when we got up for good around 7, both arms were out and she was waving them like this

So we obviously need to transition out of the swaddle and likely will move her into one of M's old sleep sacks.

I know S is one of the older "June" babies, but has anyone else done this transition yet?  If so, how did it go?  I simply don't remember it from four years ago, so I'm hoping tonight isn't too torturous.

Re: the baby is loose!

  • We are in the same situation.  D is actually a May baby, and is huge for his age (16 lbs) and his swaddlers just can't contain him anymore!  But if I try to leave his arms out, he's awake in minutes.  I was just at BRU checking out what they had and I think I'm gonna try this:

  • Charlie is sleeping like crap right now anyway because he hasn't pooped since Monday, and he's been breaking loose, so last night he went into a sleep sack. Same sleep pattern as the last few nights. I'm hoping when he finally poops it will be such a relief that he'll sleep well anyway.

Please note that I do not condone forcibly constipating your child to help with a transition, it just happened to be good timing for us :)

  • Isabel busted her arms out of her swaddles from day 1. Even the two swaddlemes we have. I kind of assume that DH and I just suck at swaddling. Anyway, I've been swaddling her with her arms out for a couple weeks. Last night, I put her in a sleep sack for the first time, and I think she loved it! Slept super well last night, from 10 to 3. The transition might not be difficult all!

  • I don't know about transitioning but Noah can break out of them all. He goes up out of the blanket ones and down under the velcro ones. So I double swaddle with the muslin blanket on the bottom and then the velcro kind on top. He sleeps better swaddled but is so strong and is a wiggler. I put him in just a diaper underneath. Don't know if that would be an option or helpful but that's what I've found works! He would wake up anytime he broke out. But he has only wiggled out of this way once before.
  • I have an ergo cocoon that I'm hoping will make the transition easier. It has snaps on the arm holes so you can keep them contained like a swaddler or undue them and it becomes a sleep sack.

  • I don't think I am much help. We swaddled in the miracle blanket until DS1 started to roll over. At that point as soon as we laid him down he would roll over and sleep on his belly and be out cold (pedi approved sleeping on his stomach since if he could roll there we had no control over his sleeping positions anymore) so basically we took the avoid approach and it paid off =P

  • With ds, I started by leaving his feet out of the MB. Then I gradually loosened the swaddle part over a few nights.

  • DD has been able to escape any and all swaddle devices since day one.  Around 3 weeks it increased, and by 5 weeks I just gave up completely.  At night I put her in a footie if it's cooler or just a t-shirt and diaper if it's warm.  She sleeps under an A&A blanket.  She also usually gets a foot out between the snaps of the footie, but now that she fits into clothes, at least all her limbs are in a sleeve or leg.

  • We started last night because the pedi gave me the "swaddling past two months increases the risk of SIDs" talk. So I just loosely wrapped her in a swaddle, she threw an epic fit, and I ended up tucking the blanket around her with her arms out. She woke up at 1 am instead of her normal 5 am. Sigh. She didn't cry extra or anything but I definitely think the swaddle was what was keeping her sleeping later. Whatever she needs I will do but it stinks returning to that MOTN feeding. She was super ornery when she woke, too, fussing at the breast, etc. It was bizarre.

  • What about trying the magic merlin sleep suit?  I don't know how big your DD is (the suit says for 3-6 months) but I've heard great things about it.

  • We've been miracle blanket lovers until this week. He is able to get both legs out really easily. Not sure what we will transition too

  • I've only ever swaddled Lily with the A&A blankets and she always managed to get her arms free and I have up trying to fight her. At nap time I don't even bother to swaddle.

We've been using the miracle blanket and he would sometimes wiggle his arms out. Last week he was getting both and and both legs out, so I started double swaddling with miracle blanket on the bottom layer and an a&a blanket on the top. I have both a bamboo and regular miracle blanket, and both the regular a&a muslin blankets and the lighter a&a bamboo blankets, so depending on the temperature I use some combination of those two swaddles and either a onesie, sleeper, or just a diaper underneath. He's just as snugly swaddled in the mornings as he was when I put him to bed at night!

Do you leave him swaddled for motn feedings?

  • My H is a miracle swaddler.  We use the A&A muslin blankets.  If I swaddle her she can break free, but she never breaks free of his.  It's astounding.  Maybe I should rent him out!  I'm not looking forward to having to stop soon, she sleeps so well when her arms aren't flailing.

I used the Magic Merlin Sleep Suit with Nola. I swaddled her until 5 months and used the sleep suit until 7 months. It worked great. It looks funny but it really does work!

  • Has anyone tried the Zipadeezip? We moved my DD from the bassinet to the PNP last night with her swaddle. She turned 90 degrees in her sleep and scooted herself into the corner. I want to get rid of the swaddle now, but she sleeps so well with it that I'm scared to.

Did she end up sleeping? We tried no swaddle last night with no success. We ended up swaddling her and she slept for 7 hours, but moved herself into the corner again!

Yes! Two nights of no swaddle and she is still maintaining her awesome sleep patterns. The first night it took her a little while to settle down, but last might I don't think she had any issues at all.

    I'll keep trying :)
  • LO should no longer be swaddled if she can roll over, correct? Do you use the sleep sack rather than a light blanket just covering them for preference or because it's safer? Sorry for the dumb questions... As a ftm I'm still learning. ;)

@MommyWaldron‌ I'm wondering the same thing

A sleep sack is safer than a lose blanket, as a loose blanket has the ability to move and could potentially end up causing problems (ie covering baby's face).

A sleep sack is a blanket that can't move, so if you're concerned that baby might get cold, then THIS is the safe choice.

  • We use the love to dream arms up swaddle. They have a product that you can zip off the arm wings when you want to transition. Www.lovetodream.com

@Jenn111211‌ we used the zipadee zip for our 1st son but he didn't like it. His feet would get caught up at the top and the body part wasn't quite tight enough to keep him calm like the swaddle.
  • @purplegem11‌ Thanks! I tried to order the Zipadeezip but it was out of stock so I ended up ordering the arms up swaddle you have. It should arrive tonight. Hopefully it will help us transition her out of the swaddle because she will not go to sleep without it and yesterday she rolled over for the first time :)
