Which room to put nursery in???? Please help!

I have two bedrooms to choose between for the nursery and I am torn and would love some input.

Bedroom 1:
Smaller, but has two large windows overlooking the street and gardens across the street.
There is only one wall I can put the crib on and with this setup, I will walk in and the crib will be immediately to the left.
There is room for a small changing table, the crib, and a chair, but no ottoman.
This room is very well lit and feels "happy" when I walk in (because of the windows and the light I think).
The chair would have a nice view of the gardens across the street.

Bedroom 2:
Larger than bedroom one.
Its an interior room and therefor only has one teeny tiny window off in the corner and the room is dark and gloomy.
Will have a shared wall with the master suite.
Big enough for the crib, a wide dresser/changing table, a bookcase, and a chair and ottoman.  The closet is also a bit larger.
The crib can go in a few places, but the best place is directly across from the door and it feels less awkward getting to the crib in this room than room #1.

Overall, it makes more sense for the layout to go with room #2 but I HATE the way the room feels when I walk in.  I'm an interior designer so I know there are things I can do to fix this, but at the end of the day, its still only going to have one window and the room just has bad energy to me so I keep leaning towards room #1, but the crib is in an awkward spot in that room and its smaller.

Also, it has been pointed out to me that a darker room may be better for baby.  I'm totally stuck.  Feedback? Suggestions???

Re: Which room to put nursery in???? Please help!

  • Is room #1 large enough to be a guest room?  The ability or inability to fit a guest bed into the alternate room would have an impact on my decision.

Otherwise... there are pros and cons to each room.  One part of me seems it makes sense to have baby closer to you and the other part seems to make sense to have baby in the room which you are happier in especially when it comes to feedings.

  • I would go with 1. I wouldnt want to put my baby in a room I find gloomy.

  • I would go with room #1.  Personally, I like a lot of light and would like the energy of that room.  Plus, I don't mind a smaller nursery because it seems cozier or something to me.  It sounds like you already are leaning towards that one IMO, so go with your gut!

If you change your mind once baby is here, you can always switch them around too!

  • My vote is for bedroom #1 as well. Just the fact that it makes you feel happy when walking in is reason enough. :)

I would go with #1 also - seems like it has better mojo for you.  I would also consider the idea of which would be more convenient for a guest room (unsure if you get a lot of overnight guests or not).  We are losing our guest room to the baby and it is really stressing me, as I am sure both grandmothers are going to offer to do a few overnights once BB is here, and we no longer have a place to put them.

I have the UO but I would go with the quietest room with the least light for now. A darker room is better for sleep in my mind. Bright is necessary for a room he/she will play in not sleep in.

  • We went with our smaller room. It faces the back yard and is more cozy to me. He can always move to the other room when he gets bigger.

Invest in some black out curtains! Those windows are going to be a pain.
  • Bedroom #1 and black out curtains if it's too bright for napping baby. Target sells every color. You can always transition baby to bigger room when needed. I know if you plan on bfeeding you will want an environment you and baby are happy in.
  • I also vote for the bright, happy room. You can always get blackout curtains if the light from the windows is a problem.

  • I think I'm the odd man out here as well. I think I'd go with room 2. The paint, bedroom theme, and how you decorate it can make it a beautiful, happy place to be. You don't NEED tons of light for it to be a happy place IMO.

In fact, we're in a similar boat. DD has the second largest bedroom. The other two bedrooms are the same size. Room 1 has a lot more light (not as great as it sounds with a 5am summer sunrise!!!!), but the placement of the windows, closet, and bedroom door would make the setup of the nursery really awkward. The closet in this room is great. Room 2 has less natural light (smaller window, near the corner) and is quieter since it's off the street. The closet is just as big as Room 1, though we need to install a closet organizer. The setup is perfect for a nursery. I don't LOVE Room 2 now as is, but after it's painted and has all the furniture, I think it will be perfect.

  • I would go with room #2, baby us generally only in the nursery to sleep so dark and quiet wins in my book. Then I would make room #1 a bright happy playroom.

  • I'd go with #1. Sunlight never affected my babes sleep. I actually preferred for it to be light during their daytime naps and dark at night.

2, you're going to want it darker for the baby sleeping anyway (don't have to buy blackout curtains), it's not on the street so probably less noise, it's closer to your room, and it's bigger!

I would suggest which ever room is more temperature controlled. With two windows are they weather stripped? With having a December baby I would worry more about drafts than my own comfort. If windows are sealed and temps are controlled the same go with one. Otherwise stick with two since you dont want baby to get sick.

  • Paint room 2 brighter, get good lighting.   Are you going to have room in #1 for a bed when the crib stage is done?  Because then you're looking at moving everything in a couple of years anyway.

I would go with room #2 - a dark room with a window that does not face the street is the best for nap times.
  • I appreciate all the advice and suggestions!

I am really still torn. I suppose the darker bigger room makes more sense but its going to take a major overhaul of that room to make it cheerful.  I am going to take a standing floor lamp into that room today and see if just adding some more light will help with that feeling.

I have to decide by the 11th of August when Pottery Barn is coming to put the crib together.

    Thanks again for the suggestions!
  • I also think 2 is a better choice, darker and bigger. Also, if you're planning on having a second you won't have to move the toddler into the smaller room.

We're having our second and the transition for DD to the other room is becoming quite an ordeal, I should've just started with her in the bigger room!
