TTM about ear piercing

If you had LOs ears pierced or plan to then please educate me. How old was your LO, or will be? What type of place did you go to (doctors office, hair salon, etc.) What kind of system did the establishment use? Did you look for anything specific when choosing where to go? Did they do both ears at the same time? Did they use any type of anesthetic to numb LOs earlobe? Basically tell me your LOs ear piercing story. TIA!

Re: TTM about ear piercing

  • Not my personal experience, but my friend pierced all of her kids ears (she has 4 daughters) and went to a local tattoo parlor/ piercing establishment.  She feels that type of place has the strictest regulations and felt safest there.  This may vary by area of course.

I've waited until my girls were older. DD1 was 4, and we just did DD2's for her 3rd birthday. I waited until they could ask for them.
Both girls were really excited about them, so it made cleaning and caring for new piercings a lot easier.
I had them both done at the mall and they did both ears at the same time.

  • I am sorry to share a bad experience but it happened to me. We went to Clair's to get LO # 3's done when she was 6 months old. I requested both ears to be done at the same time. They mated the ears and loaded the guns and click. She screamed the ladies started to unclick the guns so to speak and one gun was stuck to the earring! She crying with a piercing gun attached to her! Everyone's panicking, especially me! To wayyyyy to long to get the earring out of her ear because the gun wouldn't come off! So we also took the other earring out because I couldn't re pierce the ear that the gun was stuck to. She had them pierced for her 12 birthday. With daughter number 4 I waited until 12th birthday and as adorable as the earrings would look, I think I'll wait again. My reason for waiting was and is if anything happened, and I know it's unlikely, she would be old enough to remain calm through it. I'm sorry this is a negative story.
  • My LO was 4 months and her pedi did them. She cried for about a minute and that was that. She took it like a champ. The only place and person that I would trust was the person that has been watching her since birth. Now she is 6 months and we are about to change them out to her bitth stone.

  • I got mind done as a baby and mine are fine also. So I got LOs done when she was almost 4 months. She cried for maybe 20 seconds then drank her bottle and we never had any issues. The girl did them one at a time and suggested we pierce a little high because as she grows they will move down... It was a good experience overall and I would do it all over again! She never plays with them. The only thing you need to be careful of is getting her dressed and undressed so you don't yank the earring... There's always going to be horror stories but the good probably out weigh the bad. It's def personal choice so do what you want and think is best :)
  • We'll wait until DD is old enough to ask, and to take care of them. I do think they look very cute on babies, but (for us) we'd rather have her consent first.

We're waiting until DD is much older and can ask etc, but in reference to @carissalynp 's recommendation, according to my local board, at least in Maryland, you have to be 16 for a piercing parlor to do it.  Not sure if other states are similar or not.

  • I had mine done at the pedi when I was 12, and my mom made me pay for it myself. On the first ear, the gun stuck with the earring only halfway through, and my doc had to push it the rest of the way. Then I had to collect myself enough to sit still for the second ear. I also have trouble with the angle on mine sometimes. Imagine how pissed I was when, a couple years after my ordeal, my mom took my sister to Claire's to get hers pierced. :-w

  • We will be waiting until LO is old enough to make that decision for herself, and properly care for the piercing. When she's ready, if she ever is, I will take her to a tattoo/piercing parlour.

  • Add me to the list of people who didn't know that doctors pierced ears! Is this only up to a certain age?
I was unaware of this, too, until my acupuncturist told me that there's a pediatrician in Encinitas (not ours) where she took her 6-year-old daughter to get her ears pierced.  Apparently this particular pediatrician is who a lot of families in the area have used.  We're not planning to have it done until DD is older and wants it done, though.

  • I don't remember when I had my ears pierced, but I wear earrings next to never. Everytime I go to put them in, I need to jam it back through, and it sucks. Also, one side is angled, so that makes it even more difficult to get in.

Since I am horrible about my own ear piercings, I am going to wait until DD is old enough to take care of her own

Yes, love that idea of a mommy/daughter outing for this :)
