20 Week Scan - Gender Reveal

Hi All,

I am 20 weeks pregnant with twins via IVF ICSI. I recently had my 20 week scan and my OB is concerned that baby B is smaller than baby A and on top of it they are not able to tell the gender of Baby B.  There is something there in between those legs, if they had to predict they are thinking Baby B is a boy with hypospadias, but again no one knows for sure.  I met with a genetic counselor who suggested I do Maternity 21 Test to rule out if I'm a carrier for anything and the blood work may also help determine the gender of the 2nd baby.  I'm also scheduled for an ultrasound next Thursday to see how things are looking and with those results and the result of blood-work we should have more information.  Need to know if anyone has had a similar experience?

    Are your twins mo/di or di/di? How much smaller was Baby B? If you have di/di twins, a size difference shouldn't be as much of a concern, unless it is significant and they are worried about IUGR. As for the sex determination, I don't have any insight there, but my Baby B was born w/ hypospadias and that was not detected on any of the (many!) u/s I had before then, so I'm kinda surprised they'd be able to see that.....esp. if they couldn't even determine that what they were seeing was a penis. Either way, it really wasn't a big deal. He had surgery to correct it when he was 9 months old and has not had any issues since.

    Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm having di/di twins. Baby B is a week behind, 20% difference.
    Baby B has always been smaller though so not sure why it would be a concern, but I guess they just want to be on top of it.  They are more worried about not being able to tell the gender of Baby B bc there is something there but it looks ambiguous...we'll find out more information next week until then I'm trying to be positive and keep moving along.

    Was this a 3D scan? If it was just a standard black and white 2D scan I wouldn't even be remotely concerned about the lack of discernment regarding the sex of the baby.

    If there is no confidence in what they are telling you, I would be worried (of course who wouldn't) but I also wouldn't put too much emotion into a guess. Wait until you get more information. I'm surprised they could tell hypospadias on the u/s too but I'm not a sonographer or doctor (just a non-practicing nurse).
