VBACS anyone?

I'm looking into a vbac and I'm confident I will be able to attempt one but I am nervous. Should I just do another section for health of baby? I mean recovery sucks because I do not take pain medication and not to mention this time around I will have a Toddler running around also. What should I do? I effaced and dilated quick last time but she was not positioned right ended up In C-section.

Re: VBACS anyone?

  • I will not even try.
Just witnessed a horrendous uterine rupture 3 weeks ago.
But, it's a personal choice and I understand there are risks with EVERYTHING in life. That's just one risk I'm not willing to take.

Best wishes to the brave ladies !!!!!!

    Check out VBAC facts.

There is a score your doc can compute to determine your chances of a successful VBAC based on your individual factors -- that might help you in making a decision, too.

ETA My husband witnessed a horrendous uterine rupture on his OB rotation. The docs had her in the OR for hours and hours, and ultimately she lived but spent a week in the ICU afterwards. She had had a normal vaginal birth, no history of c-section or uterine anomalies. There are always horror stories about birth -- you have to look at the evidence... but of course you must be comfortable with your decision.
  • I am hoping to be able to have a VBAC for baby number 2. I'll be able to talk to my ob/gyn next week. I want to be able to experience a natural birth.
  • I am going to try a VBAC. I have a toddler to care for, so I do not want to have a c-section - unless medically necessary.

I had an indued VBAC with number 2. I came in they broke my water, and then started me on a little pitocin, I never got above 10. I was in labor for about 18 hours but it was a much much easier recovery than my c-section. I'm planning on having my 2nd VBAC with this baby

  • I am also hoping for a VBAC. I had a scheduled c-section due to baby being footling breech. My previous Dr. said I would be a great canidate for a VBAC if I waited 2 years. It will have been over 2 years so I hope my current Dr. will agree.

  • Hoping for an HBAC here.  As long as the placenta isn't over my scar, baby isn't breach and there is no acreta of course.

Can also check with ican.org for more information about VBAC and safety.

  • I was told they can't use pitocin in a VBAC because the drug makes your uterus contact harder, which ups your risk for a uterine rupture. Anyway, I met with a midwife, who was SOOO much more supportive of vbacs than any of the OBs I've seen. The hospital I chose is also very supportive of VBAC. I'm going to try. I know it may not be successful, but I'd rather at least try.

    This.

My first was an emergency CS (gall bladder attack causing 7 minute contractions, 30 seconds apart... not fun... and super stressful to baby). We planned a VBAC for #2, but had to go into labor naturally. Made it to 42+1 with zero progress (no dilation or effacement), no contractions, and a happy baby, but we scheduled the CS.

This time, we are going for a VBA2C. We have a team of midwives that work with an OB practice. If we get to the same point as #2, we will ask for a Natural CS.

  • My OB is confident that I should try for VBAC.  My emergency c/s was due to baby being breach (didn't realize he was breach until my water broke).   Here's what my OB told me in general:  If I want to have more kids after this one, then I should try for a VBAC since c/s after 3+ can get tricky.  If we are 2 and done, just go ahead and do a RCS for convenience sake.

OB did say that she won't induce me due to my prior c/s.  And she doesn't want me going more than 7 days after EDD.  So we decided that we'll schedule a RCS for AFTER my due date and hope baby comes before.  LO was 2 weeks early, so hopefully we'll have a good chance for this baby coming via VBAC before the RSC.

  • This thread topic doesn't apply to me personally, but a couple of doula friends of mine have recently shared the following video from The New Yorker on facebook.  Since it shares some encouragement specifically about VBACs, I thought it might be of interest to some.

I was told I am a candidate for a vbac, however I feel that my first natural delivery was barely achieved...I was a hot mess after that delivery and my cs was a much easier recovery. So I will just do a rcs. I personally feel it's safer for everyone. (Me and baby)
  • Some docs will do pit with a VBAC, some won't. I had a cesarean with my first. My second was still born at 20w, and I was induced with cytotec.

I actually just watched this one yesterday and thought it was great. My favorite line is "It's not about having a successful VBAC. It's about not having an unnecessary c-section."

  • I made a really lengthy response to a similar post recently and don't feel like digging it up, so I'll try to explain my story in short.

I had a very detailed birth plan last time that involved having as little intervention as possible, no medication etc.

After a very long labor after my waters breaking naturally, the clock was running out and I was not progressing. I ended up with an emergency c/s and have dealt with a lot of trauma from the experience. I thankfully didn't have PPD but both my husband and I took a long time to mourn the birth, meaning I did have some sort of...maybe PTSD? I have no idea. While we were, obviously, ultimately happy that we had our healthy baby, the birth DID and does matter and we mourned the loss of the birth we had wanted.

I'm going in this time with pretty much the same birth plan (I hope...I still haven't talked to my midwife) and am hoping beyond all hope for a VBAC.

Part of me questions this decision because the emergency c/s last time ended up involving me and my husband not being present for the birth and if I were to schedule a c/s at least I'd know for sure we could both be there for the birth...but I can't not try. I have to try. I want to have a vaginal delivery so badly and this might be our last baby.
  • Some Dr.s will use Pit some won't, my Dr. with DD allowed up to 10 but no more. When I went in that morning they were going to dilate with a Foley bulb but I had already dilated enough so they chose to break my water instead and use Pit to help it along.

  • I also had a very traumatic c/s. I have already had a pretty lengthy conversation with my new OB about VBAC plans, and she couldn't have been more supportive. She told me that they would let me go to 42 weeks, that she would be wollkn to break my water to kick start labor, and that she considered pitocin ok to use to augment labor.

She did say that using pitocin "doubles the risk of uterine rupture" but also explained that risk doubles from about 1% to about 2% to give that some perspective.

  • I'm going for my second VBAC. There are risks involved, but there are risks doing ANYTHING and I feel the risk isn't great enough for me not to try again. This is my 2nd VBAC and I have an 80% chance of success.

  • I posted about this the other day. I've had a vaginal and a c/a and neither was pleasant. That being said, I talked to my OB and he said I am a good candidate for a vbac.
  • I'm looking into a vbac and I'm confident I will be able to attempt one but I am nervous. Should I just do another section for health of baby? I have five kids and this will be my sixth, my first was a c-section and I have had all my others natural. I never had a problem. If you think u can do it then go ahead. Mind u that the DR. Gets paid 7000 more the last check for c-sections. I feel that now everyone is getting it done.. The recovery sucks, natural is so much better.

Did you have references for that $7000 comment?

Everyone's situation is unique and thank god we live in a time that affords us so many options to accommodate all the possible scenarios that can happen in child birth. If we only had one option, the "natural" option, many more of us would die or our babies would.

Do what is best for your situation and what you feel comfortable with, there is no 100% right way that works for everyone.
  • I am thinking about trying for a VBAC. I plan to talk with my OB though and weigh the options. My DS was born via emergency csection at 34 weeks so none of my plans for delivery were even an option. Honestly though my recovery was pretty easy. I was up walking with my catheter out about 6 hours post. I had minimal pain other just some discomfort and never took any pain medicine. So if my OB feels I'm not a candidate, I have made peace with that. As others have said, there are risks either way.

  • Seems like I don't have a choice unless I switch to a different OB her group of Drs doesn't do VBACS at the moment.

  • Thank you!! Gave me a lot to think about!! Good luck to all the mommas who will try for a VBAC and or have RCS or natural birth! God bless you and your baby or baby's (twins)!! :)
  • I watched business of being born and kicked myself for not watching it before having my first. I am moving from my ob to a midwife practice and will be trying vbac. I remember ob saying I am a good candidate for vbac.. But I have more confidence it'll go by my plan at the midwives than the ob office for now.

Did you watch the first one or the More Business of Being Born? I am debating buying the latter, so a good review will be more of an incentive to checkout my Amazon cart.

  • Yes, I never ever EVER want to have another C-section again, unless it's a dire emergency. The recovery sucked, and though I have a high tolerance for pain, I don't like it. Not one bit.

  • Lots of research! It's just as safe that's for sure. I'm having a VBAC with a doc that is pro natural births all the way and supports midwives but if something goes wrong he can assist ASAP
  • I watched the first one. The second is on Netflix and it's on my list to watch next.
  • I had a c/s with my 1st after 40+ hours of labor, my dialation was regressing, & baby was distressed. Unmediated VBAC with my 2nd 9 hours start to delivery, the recovery was much easier!! Such a more peaceful scenario all the way around. I'll be trying another VBAC. Good luck ladies!!
