Baby Names

Elisabeth as a MN?

DH and I are pretty set on naming our DD Alice and I'm trying to come up with a MN. It would be nice to be able to use the MN to honor family members since DS's MN comes from DH's dad but it's not absolutely necessary.

I'm thinking about Elisabeth as a MN with that spelling being the only way I'd use the name. I have a close family member whose name is Lisa (given name, not short for anything) and MIL's MN is Elizabeth. I'm not a fan of Z's in general and if we're honoring family I want to be sure to get my family in there somewhere since this is likely our last child.

However even though Elisabeth is a perfectly valid legitimate spelling of the name, I'm slightly concerned about DD having to spell it out for people her entire life even if it is just a MN.

Also BIL recently named his daughter Elizabeth but she goes by a nickname. I hope they wouldn't get upset if we use Elisabeth as a MN but I'm not going to ask their input beforehand bc we don't discuss names with family so no one can give their opinions.

What would you do? Should I use Elisabeth or keep looking?

Re: Elisabeth as a MN?

  • Fabulous!
My grandma spells it that way. Traditional austrian.

  • My sister and I both used Elizabeth as a middle name and we have a cousin named Elizabeth. I think it's just 'one of those names' that goes with a lot...like Ann or Lynn that tends to be used by multiple people in the family.  We used Elizabeth with a z.  I don't even know if my daughter knows how to spell her middle name.  I wouldn't dwell on the s for spelling in the future.  If you do have to put your middle name on anything it's usually just an initial.

    What about Alice Grace?

I looked back in our family history for my daughters name because I wanted a family name.  With this pregnancy, we are just picking what we like! LOL

  • I should add that I think Alice Elisabeth is beautiful and timeless!
  • Talk to your BIL about it if it bothers you.  My daughter's first name is my niece's middle name--I asked my sister and she was totally fine with it.

I am an Elizabeth and I've always loved having an uncommon letter in my name.  It's also the default spelling, but Elisabeth is fine.  Also, Lisa is a nickname for Elizabeth.  So you'd be able to honor your cousin either you spell it.

  • I love Elisabeth! My cousin has that as a MN as well (same spelling) and I just adore it

Thanks guys.  DH didn't think any of my concerns were reasons not to use Elisabeth either, and to just use the name with the spelling I liked.  It's nice to get some validation though since we aren't discussing it with anyone we know IRL!

  • I think Alice Elisabeth is great! I prefer the softer "s" sound over the "z" in Elizabeth also. Go for it!
  • Alice Elisabeth is very pretty!
