Board books or Paperback?

I know we have a lot of heavy stuff going on recently, which makes this seem like an even more ridiculous question, but since retail therapy is my zen place for now I wanted some input.

For the classics, should I go paperback or board books? I plan to mostly register for books, then fill in anything that I really want LO to have. I get that board books are probably best for the first few years, but for some reason I still lean towards paperbacks.

Any thoughts? TIA

It has been a heavy week, so I'm okay with a lighter topic for a bit.

For DS, we actually did both in some titles. I preferred the paper page books when we were reading to him. It seemed like the illustrations were so much more detailed and it gave us more to talk about as he got older. These books got put up and only my DH and I used them.

The board books are great for when he wanted to look at them himself or if we wanted to take some to dinner, church, etc. They are more compact and travel a little better. DS had full access to these on his bookshelf and would just flip through them all the time.

Board books definitely for 0-2years, then paper back. We had the soft books for 0-12 mos, but then they start tearing or writing on books, so we bought board books. The stories were also shorter so that was a perk. Eta: seeing that board books are shorter, they can use them as a learn to read book in the future. Dd is almost 4 and still loves her Board books!

We put paper books away for a long time. Even though my 3 year old now does okay with them, we have to keep them from my 19 month old.

Thanks ladies. I guess I knew better on the paperbacks. I'm just not crazy about board books. I like @beachy6 's idea to get both and use the paperbacks for story time only LO grows up a bit.

I registered for a number of really nice hard bound paper books with my daughter. She's 17 months old and we haven't read any of them once. She LOVES her board books though. And you can usually get them really cheap. Marshals and TJ Maxx for example usually have them for $3-$5 each.

Board books. They tear up paper. Although all will be scribbled all over with a pen they magically found somewhere.

We did both as well. Paper books while supervised until we were sure he wouldn't destroy them.

I am with you I love the paper books for classics we just kept these on a diff shelf out of reach. We got baby board books for DD to use on her own.

We have mostly board books. We have a few paper classics and some of my siblings older paperbacks but they are put away becuase they just get torn apart now.

We have a combination. The board books are the ones that are within his reach though. They also tend to be the ones I read to him because he likes to help and turn pages.

We have quite a bit of both, though DD is more drawn to the board books. They're easier to turn the pages, shorter stories usually, and often more interactive. She's also ripped the pages in one or two paperbacks already.

We have a mix. DD seems to actually prefer the paperback books. She did go through a I want to rip every page phase, but it didn't last long (she is 15 months old). We just put the nice paperback books up on a shelf that she can't reach.
