Nursing strike

My LC just basically diagnosed us as going through a nursing strike- anyone else had this? Arching back and JUST SAYING NO to the boob. Going in tomorrow to her office to figure it out. What are the typical causes?

  • A few ladies on my old BMB went through this. I don't remember the specifics, but I think all their babies returned to nursing after some very frustrating days. You might check the BFing board? I hope you get some answers at the LC!

  • Some times it's something silly like perhaps they were nursing and became scared for what ever reason or baby got hurt such as accidentally pinched while nursing.
  • Yeah there's not always a good or obvious reason.

  • We went through this a couple of weeks ago. DS didn't eat for 9 hours. Same thing. Screamed at the boob, arched back. He did finally nurse with encouragement. Back to the hamburger boob and shove it in. It has been an unexplained event. Although the first thing the doctor asked me was if I had changed my soap, deodarant, laundry detergent etc because sometimes baby just plain won't like that. Just a thought..
  • @Trimby2409‌ this is happening with my LO as of yesterday. He'll nurse for a minute or two and then pull off arch his back and scream / fuss. Glad I'm not the only one going through it. According to wonder weeks we are about to enter the 4th leap and I'm wondering if this my also be a factor ?? Praying we go back to normal soon
  • My son did this a few times, there didn't seem to be an apparent/obvious cause- could have been teething or whatever, but it usually only lasted a few days.  However, at 10.5 months old he went thorough one that never actually ended. For two weeks I tried and tried and tried and he would not nurse; we ended up weaning at that point.

  • This happened with my son as well at 6 months and I probably gave up too quickly but I ended up weaning as well so I'm interested to know what advice u get when u go in bc if this happens to me this time around I would really hate to have to wean again.

Wow that was the longest run on ever

  • Ya I would like to know as well. My guy started refusing the right boob today, so I gave in and offered the left, which nursed on for a few feeds. Then at bedtime, when he always eats, he refused both boobs. Going on 4 hrs btwn feeds now & he's a on the dot every 2 he feeder lately. I'm going to my BF group tmrw so I'm gonna ask about it then.

My kid is also refusing my boob today and yesterday. It's making me so paranoid because my low supply really can't handle his fussiness and refusal right now.

  • We had this problem around 6 weeks, so I was having to pump frequently. It was very frustrating, but we made it through. I hope it works out for you! In our case, she did have reflux issues, and I am fairly certain I have overactive letdown, so leaning back while nursing really helped. One thing the lactation specialist recommended to me was to "woo" my baby back to the breast. She told me to drink a glass of wine and relax and advised me to spend a day in bed skin to skin with baby encouraging her to nurse.

  • I had this issue too. The cause for us was because he went to his grandparents overnight and the separation from me and bottles caused a nursing strike. We went through some rough days but finally got back to normal. I found he nursed the best at night when he was half out of it and during the day I would sometimes have to pump first to get things going for him so it was ready as soon as I put him to me. Bc my issue was from the bottle though I didn't offer him the bottle at all through this period. Hope it doesn't last long for you! I know how frustrating it is!

  • Thanks everyone! So get this now in not saying this solved it but I realized I was showering with my husbands body wash in the guest bath cuz she was asleep next to our bathroom! I changed back to my stuff and she took the breast fine twice today, like there was never an issue. Crazyville! His stuff and mine is from whole foods and is all natural but his has distinct woodsy smells- kinda manly, like cedar and pine. I guess she misses my citrus mint smell! Thanks for all of your input, especially those ladies that mentioned this scent issue exactly! So happy it's nothing serious and we can work to fix it!
