I am being induced on August 7th due to severe preeclampsia. Baby will be 34 weeks on that day. He is doing great and already weighs 4lbs, 8oz. Any advice or things to expect with pitocin. TIA
If they are giving you something to dilate/soften your cervix before starting the pit (cervidil, Foley bulb, etc) and offer to give you something to help you sleep, take it! I thought I wouldn't have any problem sleeping but I was so uncomfortable from the hospital bed, worried about labor, and in some discomfort from the Foley bulb that I didn't get to sleep until 3 am. They woke me at 6 to eat before breaking my water and starting the pit, so I had a long labor on very little sleep. I was able to get some rest after I finally got the epi, but it would have been nice to start the day well rested.
Contractions are definitely stronger but you can get an epi at any time and you won't be able to feel it. Ask for something to help you sleep too, try to stay as comfortable as you can. The only side effect it made my bp drop after several hours.
Bring snacks for SO. Drinks lots of water!! I was given a pill (sorry can't remember the name of it) and they got things going quicker than anticipated so I agree with pp if they offer you some pain meds not an epi take it!! Good luck!! Don't be nervous soon you will have a beautiful baby!
Just try to stay calm and relaxed. Ask questions of your nurses, they are there to help!! Don't be afraid to ask for pain control if you feel the need, there's nothing wrong with that. Best wishes for you and LO!
I was induced after my water broke and the pitocin really wasn't that terrible (I did get an epidural around 5cm though). Labor did progress pretty fast though. Good luck and T&P for a healthy baby!
I was given Pitocin with my first. They put in the IV around 8:30am and I started having contractions pretty quickly, however, they didn't actually start to hurt until at least 3 hours later so I didn't get an epidural until around lunch time. I was less than 1cm dilated to start with and it took until around 6:30pm for me to be fully dilated. I'd like to think that had the doctor been able to break my water in the morning first thing I would have progressed faster but it was the most painful thing ever when she tried (not sure why) so they waited until I got the epi and did it then. I had a pretty restful afternoon waiting which was nice. I got pretty hungry though and I couldn't eat.

I have had 2 inductions, and my contractions were not severe (I am a wimp). I got to 7CM with my first before I got an epi (anesthesiologist was in an emergency c-section) and I was ok with demerol. The demerol made me feel drunk, but I was able to sleep. I got my epi at 4CM with my second induction. That was only because I wanted to avoid demerol and I wanted to make sure the doc was there. My only advice is to prepare to wait. My first induction was 17 hours and 42 minutes. My second was approx. 10 hours. Good luck.
I was induced with #3. I had to wait for 5hrs for my epi with #2 and I honestly didn't think the induction was any worse than the contractions while I was in labor with my second.
It really depends on how your doc increases the dosage and how your body responds to the pitocin. My OB started at small dosage and increased in small increments and I responded well to it so I only went up 3 steps and then I was pretty much taken off.
If it gets to be too much, go for the epidural. No shame. Child birth hurts. If you can handle it, more power to ya! I have no idea what will happen with my induction this time as the epi didn't work last time so I went through birth without. It's totally doable but also up to you and your comfort level.
I've already been in the hospital for 6 weeks so they are starting the meds for ripening my cervix on the 6th and then pitocin at 5am on Thursday. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.
The contractions come on more suddenly than gradual. They are stronger and you don't get much of a break in between. If you plan on an epidural, don't wait too long because contractions do come in quickly when you're induced.
I was induced with cervadil and pitocin, the contractions definitely came on fast, strong and pretty constant. Try to get as much rest beforehand as possible! Good luck...you'll do great!
